Bicycle Mechanics - Is this wheel repairable or not

Hello all after my ride this morning I noticed my rear wheel had gone out of true. These are '06 Mavic Cosmos with about 1,400kms (900miles) on them in the three months I have had them. I weigh 100kg (220 pounds). Fairly smooth roads and I havent been rough on them.

I was about to get the spoke key out and true it when I noticed that one of the eyelets seemed to have come apart and the top of it was just sliding up and down the spoke. I then saw another on the other side of the wheel from the busted one that looks like it is pulling out of the rim.

From what little I can tell on the mavic site the eyelets connect to the inner and outer surfaces of the rim. Are these repairable or is the rim trashed and needing replacement. I havent pulled the rim tape as I want to take it to the LBS.

Rim is toast. Just get another rim, tape it next to the old one and loosen the spokes and transfer them over. Takes about 15-25 minutes total including the truing if you have an electric screwdriver. About 30-45 minutes if you spin the nipples on manually.

Mavic used to be the premiere top-of-the-line rim brand, but they've slipped way way down. Sun appears to be making better rims than Mavic now.

If the wheels are only 3 months old they could still be under warranty.

In the alternative, that wheel would still work fine as a dedicated trainer wheel. True it up and go for it.

Unless you're experienced with wheel building and repair, I'd take it to the LBS and have them look at it. The rim is likely toast and it could be that there are other spokes with uneven tension that are going to pop or break soon as well.

I'm pretty sure the rim is still rideable. The eyelets add a cleaner contact to the rim, but are not necessary for it too function from what I've been told. True it up, but defnitely check the warranty because that should not have happened this soon.

The discoloration on the eyelets and other parts of the rim looks like chemical corrosion. Has the rim been subjected to salt water?
In any event you should ask about warrantly replacement.

The crap on them is just road grime - hadnt cleaned it for a while. Looking at this picture of how the eyelet attaches to the rim wall I think that the eyelet itself seems to have failed where the red part attaches to the larger yellow piece.

Given they have ony been on the bike since mid September I will take these to the LBS and see what can be done under warranty. Will need to get them to give me a replacement wheel though as I think this is going to take a while.
