Bicycle Mechanics - Wippermann

The Connex site lists Campy and Shimano and SRAM specific models. Is there cross compatability? Example....could a 10X1 work on a Shimano cassette? Or are the chain dimensions so exact that they only work with one brand cassette/derailer and chain ring, etc?

The Campy-width 10X1 probably won't work very well on a Shimano 10-speed drivetrain as it is 6.2 mm and Wipperman's Shimano-spec chains are 6.0 mm wide. The Shimano-spec chains will work on a Campy drivetrain and, in fact, Campy's own ultra-narrow chains are now 5.9 mm.

I called Wipperman's distributor about using their Shimano-width chains on a 10-speed Campy bike and was told they would actually be better than their Campy-spec'ed chains. The fact that Wipperman's Shimano chains are generally less expensive than their Campy chains is a plus.

Not yet as my Wipperman 10X1 (came with the build kit) is still in good condition. When the time comes to replace it, I plan to get one of their Shimano width chains, or even (horrors!), use a Shimano 10-speed chain.
