Is it normal to have the chain slightly scrape the front derailor when the front is set to the biggest chain ring and the rear to the smallest cog set?
No, it can be fixed. Sounds like you have your upper tension screw in to far. Try turning it out a tad.

thanks for the site .. dun really understand how to go about doin it though.. do i turn the upper limit screw ?

and also when i ride the bike itself i cant seem to hear the scraping sound .. that is only present when i turn the pedals with the bike on a stand...
