Texas - Bikeforums Dallas ride this saturday

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ive been talkiing to cuda2k, and we're thinking this saturday would be a great day for
all the BF'ers to take in a ride. Appx 33miles as Cuda estimates. We'll meet at Richardson
Bike Mart on Campbell and begin the ride at high noon. Please let us know if you'd like to
come.
Route will be from RBM in Richardson, down to White Rock Lake via surface streets and the White Rock Creek trail. One lap around the lake, and then back to RBM.
I'll be riding the Barracuda Mk.I (see sig for pics), and I'll likely ride over from my apartment near by. If the weather permits (and it should) I'll be in my BikeForums jersey.

Maybe in.
I'm doing the 34 miler sat morning but would be up for a few more if it's a slower pace than the morning ride.
Yeah, we'll be taking it easy. I'll be on the Barracuda so I'll be looking at an avg around 17ish or lower.

Sorry guys but I will be doing a club ride Saturday morning. I prefer to be making it home by noon instead of leaving. Y'all have fun!!!

Cuda - I was actually tempted to drive up for the ride. When are you guys coming down for a little hill action? :D

I would love to come and ride with you guys. I don't know if I could climb the hills as fast as you guys but it would be fun trying. My wife and I are both off for the week of Christmas, we may have to make a day trip to Austin. What type of gearing do you use on your road bike???

No worries Kevin - I haven't been on the bike much lately and probably don't scoot all that fast right now - down, up or anything else. :) I have a 12-27 on right now though not by design. I needed to replace my cassette and I happened to have this one laying around. I'd prefer a 12-25. Tonight is hill night, as a matter of fact. Yay. ;)
Ravenmore, come on up. There's a couple short hills around White Rock that I like to take to get the heart up, but we don't have any extended climbs around here. I'm under the weather right now, but hope to shake it by the weekend. I'll be in SoCal over Christmas, but hopefully some time next spring I'll get a chance to make it down to Austin.

After riding in Austin, I don't think those short hills at Whiterock Lake would even phase any seasoned Austin cyclist.

Have you climbed any of the side streets off Winsted Rd after you pass over the spillway on Garland Rd? They're short, but steep and get steeper as you climb to the top. Unlike dump hill that finally starts leveling off closer to the top.

Many, many times. I used to ride at Whiterock a couple of times per week. My office used to be very close to Whiterock lake. That used to be the only way I could get any cycling done.

I lived in Dallas for 10 years in the Knox/McKinney area and used to ride over to White Rock and back. I have to admit that once you tackle the tougher stuff here there's nothing Dallas can throw at you that will remotely intimidate you. I love Dallas though and getting lost on the country roads out to the north was one of my favorite things to do in college (went to N. Texas for a year). I don't prefer to think of it as better, or worse, just different. Trust me, there are days when I get ticked at the hills and the fact there's always "one more" when sometimes all you want to do is get home. Tonight was a good example. It started out at 74 degrees, but while I was out it dropped 20 to 25 degrees to about 50 degrees or so. I was miserable and wanted nothing more but to get home asap. But no, there were 3 or 4 12+ degree climbs involved in getting home. Sigh. Well, at least it helped warm me up a little.
I kind of have an obligation now on Saturday so I'm stuck here. I'll try to come up there in the next month though and maybe we can all go put in some miles?

Let us know when, and maybe we can schedule a january ride to include you.
Noon? time is a bit late atmo. I have to check with SWMBO to see what we
have planned. I do know she wants to go out and ride, but thats usually a shorter
slower pace ;)
if we do Jan ride can we make it earlier?

The PBA is starting to plan routes away from Sachse. The cops have been harrassing cyclists. Theyll follow groups and wait till they see anyone run a stop sign so they can ticket. In Sachse its a $250 ticket. Plano its just $90.
thats my take on Sachse
Nice to hear that, thanks for the heads up on the Sachse police. If the ride time is moved up, I may have to miss, I as have made plans for Sat morning with the wife and we have already arranged for a baby sitter. If time is going to change, let me know ASAP so I can try to change plans. Either route is fine with me.
I opted for 11am-noon because I've got a holiday party with the office Friday night. However I've come down with a head cold and may or may not make it to the party and/or the ride. I'll see how I feel in another 24-36hrs.
Alka seltzer plus cold medicine is the best thing I have found for beating this stuff. Sudafed is great if you have that sinus pressure headache.

personally I like sinutab with codiene for the sinus headaches, of course we can't get that
over the counter here. does make riding more dicey than usual though :D

Jack Daniels makes a cold medicine I really like! Can't ride as well on it either, but it does make me bulletproof and or invisibile.:D

Ill lead the ride if cuda2k is too sick.
regardless: Everyone please have your I.C.E. numbers in your cell phone, and health insurance card easy to find in your wallet in case you get run over.

Sounds good I may be able to make it. I am riding a motorcycle for a friend to her new house in Fort Worth. She has two motorcycles stored at a neighbors in Arlington and asked if I would ride one for her. Gonna be fun. I havent ridden a moto since I sold mine in the summer. If I get back to the house in time to grab my bike I will head to meet you guys. I am thinking we are meeting at 10 to take the motos to Fort Worth.

What kind of crank and chainring is that???
Hobartlemagne
12-15-06, 01:51 PM
Its a 20yr old shimano 105 crank, and a Rocketring chainring.
Im getting a black crank soon, and Ill paint the chainring black too.
I want the whole bike to be black and gold.

I'm with you guys, I'll brave a little cold to get out earlier. I'm going to be a "game time" decision for tomorrow's ride so don't curse me if I'm not there.
Everyone have a good weekend.
Still feelin like crap, so I'll make the decision to go or stay in a few hours.

Sorry bout that Cuda, Im absolutelty going. The weather report looks good enough.
No real precipitation- just cool and damp.
I'm going to meet ya'll over there and at least start the ride with the group. I may head back when we reach the lake depending on how I feel.
Hey guys, have a good ride. I just got in from the RBM ride and the wind was pretty strong.
Post a ride report so we can see what we missed.

^^^ +10!!! I just got back from the PBA ride and the wind is no joke today!!!
The weather was a little damp at first but it ended up being a nice day. We had about 40 people in our group.
Hobartlemagne, Jsharr and I were all that headed out from RBM. Lotek and his wife stopped by to say hello before we headed out. The wind beat me down quickly as I'm still recovering from this cold and some lack of sleep. Beautiful day to be sailing maybe (on a pretty good sized boat anyways), but riding south into the wind was not what my body was ready for today.

The wind is what changed my plans for this morning. I originally planned on riding from my house to RBM Frisco to do their ride with them then ride back home. I would have had to ride 15 miles solo into that headwind to get there. I decided to do the PBA 8:00 ride instead which ended up being a great ride. The more people you have taking turns pulling in a rotating pace line, the easier it is to fight the wind. This is one of the main reasons I prefer rides with more people plus it's just fun to get out and socialize.
