I would like to get a cycling jacket for a "special friend" who enjoys riding. I think that bright colors are important for safety, but she doesn't like anything too garish (like the usual hi-vis green you see). I would like to get her something that she will actually wear, so I am thinking hot pink may be acceptable to her while still being good for visibility. Any recs on a good jacket for Calif. winter riding (down into the 40s or so)? Doesn't need to be full Goretex, but some water resistance would be nice.
Thanks!

Assos had something really gorgeous-looking in a catalog last night. but I suspect that's a kind of pricey manufacturer, as they advertise with all the other bike porn in VeloNews.
But it WAS breathtakingly gorgeous. Too bad the model had no quads.
I think the Pearl Izumi Optik has some fans.

that's my favorite summer jacket cuz it folds/crushes up so tiny!!!!!
If you're bargain hunting (which I know you aren't, since she's special :) ), Sierra trading post has some killer deals. Spend $50 and you can use google checkout option to get $20 off. If you spend $75 (before discounts) you can get 20% off using this code: 51666 and you can still use the $20 google checkout discount after the 20% off. I loaded up on smartwool socks and sweatpants and got out for dirt cheap.

Not a woman but I got a Performance brand "transformer jacket".
http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=19314&subcategory_ID=1130
It blocks the wind well, is very light and the sleeves zip off to become a vest for the springtime.
I got High Vis but I want to be seen on the road. I highly recommend it.
I know they have several women's versions of their clothing.
Thanks guys and keep it coming- love the advice so far!

Yeah, like this one myself, purchased after Cali talked so highly about it. It offers no warmth of its own however it does an outstanding job of cutting wind. With a base layer underneath, I'm pretty toasty.

Looks like he Optik isn't available in bright colors, though.
i got the white... didn't like the blue... and the red is a really icky shade!!

Hi, I'm new here.
I've been lurking for a long while but finally decided to post when I saw this thread. (Caligurl and Brandy may know me as Bluetree from the TE forum).
I head out on my bike before dawn on most days, so for 40° weather I recommend the Etze Ondo Goiz Jersey at $169. http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=22582
Etze Ondo makes as good as any clothing I've tried on and it's half the price of Assos.
I also recommend the Pearl Izumi Microsensor jacket for $129. http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=20957
I'm not a big fan of PI (more of a Castelli gal) but they have come out with a really nice fleece-lined jacket. I wore it over my trisuit during the bike leg of the Hemet tri and it cut the bitter desert winds beautifully, while not overheating me a bit. Below is a picture of it after my race.
I have also worn both of these jackets while running in cold weather, so they wick sweat beautifully while still keeping me warm.
If it's really, really cold, I'll go with the Gore Phantom jacket, but honestly, I hardly ever get wear it.
