I am planning on building up a new bike for my commute (50 hilly kms round trip - fast and unloaded)

Out of the frames I could find on sale I have narrowed the choice down to two:

Wilier Evasion (2001 model – Easton Elite tubing) at $557
Specialized Allez Elite Cro-Mo (2003 model – Columbus Foco tubing) at $581

I normally ride Cinelli Aliante Altec2 frame which I love and don’t want to trash on my commute. I wonder if the Easton Elite will be very harsh. I know that Foco is very high-end steel while Elite is middle range alu.

Any ideas or opinions?

If those are your choices, I would go with the Specialized. It's got a great ride and is still pretty light. Salsa is much cheaper in price now as they are under new ownership. Their steel bikes are actually made by Waterford, and now they have a new Scandium frame with carbon seatstays that is pretty smokin'.

The steel, for commuting, is my vote.
