So I want to overhaul my hubs and I am somewhat of a newbie mechanic. I have Shimano Deore XT hubs on my touring bike, and for the life of me I cannot find out where to put the cone wrench! Here is a link to an exploded diagram of the hub that I have http://bike.shimano.com/media/cycling/techdocs/en/bikecomponents/HB/EV-HB-M760_v1_m56577569830539637.pdf

The problem I am facing is that I can't seem to put my cone wrench on the cone since the space between the seal ring and lock nut is too small. I am using a standard Park Tool cone wrench (not the double headed kind). Is this a problem with my tool, or is there a way to remove the seal ring?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have overhauled these same hubs about a year ago but it was with the help of a friend and I simply cannot recall what he did!

Thanks,

S

Yep, this can be a problem. I also have XT hubs and sanded down a standard cone wrench on a belt sander until it was thin enough. Didn't have to take off much. There may be a thinner cone wrench, but I didn't have it. Good luck.
