View Full Version : How to ruin 2 good rides...

It's finals week for me, so I took a couple days off work and found myself tired of studying after a few hours yesterday. I went on a ride with my sister down to Banning's Bikes (shameless plug) and she flatted on the way there. From Banning's to Knowlwoods (.5 miles) she flatted again. On the way home she flatted AGAIN. I told her to wait on the sidewalk while I sprinted the 2 miles home and grabbed my truck.

Today I took the singlespeed out to do a loop through a local park and had a great ride. Came around the corner kind of fast to get in my driveway and hit the lip of the driveway skirt at a funny angle and blew both tires! Spent the next half hour changing out tubes on my SS and put new tubes/tires on sister's bike. Totally sucked.

Wierd thing is is that I hadn't had a flat in over 2 years. Have I upset the cycling gods? what do I do to atone for my sins? ride a century finally?

Maybe you got all your flats out of the way for the next 2 years. Good luck

I also had one of the longest flatless streaks and boom.....since about a month ago I started flatting every single week on different bikes. Then came the Burrito ride last Saturday where I went through 4 rear tube changes! I ended up abandoning that ride half way through after convincing myself that the wheel was causing these flats and I wasn't having any fun at all. I limped through Camp Pendleton, pumping air in the rear tire every 1/8 of a mile so I can get to the oceanside Amtrak station for the ride back to Irvine.

You could try it. No guarantees that it will help, though. :p

OK so you've been cursed too George! I'm blaming you- what did you do to upset cycling god?

I can vouch for him it was no fun.
Heather I found that street you told me about Skyline Drive. I drove up it, but the same as you I have finals until next week then I am going to ride it.

That would be my suggestion. Won't help any in terms of you not having any flats, but it will challenge you and take your mind off them (i.e. the ride is worth the risk and ultimate headache of having to deal with things like fixing flats). And by the way, I had two flats on my first (and so far, only) double century and the second one was on PCH in pitch black (other than my headlight) just four miles from the finish line! The cycling gods take pity on no one! :D

That's how flats happen for me as well. I figure most of the time it's because something got stuck in the tire and is popping tubes, or a bur in the rim, or worn tire, or something like that. Other times I just can't figure it out but the plague will end as quickly as it began and I'll go months without a flat. Go figure.

How did you know that? Yes, I was balling like a baby. Just ask Kermit from LA Wheelman who took my call (to come pump my tire as my cartridges were out). But he will also tell you that I changed it myself and insisted that I ride the last four miles in lieu of him driving me up to about 1/4 mile away to cross the finish line on bike. I can cry and be tough! Kind of like what Clint Eastwood would have appeared as had he really been a Clinintine Eastwood. ;) :p :D
