Hello...
I have a friend and she isnt doing so hot financially. She has an older road bike that needs some help... The wheels are getting rusty in the spokes and her chain/cassette(freewheel?) needs to be replaced.
Does anyone in or close to OC have a decent set of wheels that will handle a 6 or 7 speed freewheel(I need to confirm exactly what she has) that they are willing to sell??? also I would like to purchase a cassette/freewheel and chain if anyone has one in their spare parts bin.
if you dont have the parts, but know websites that carry older wheels/parts, etc. PLEASE post them here! and if you have parts for sale that I could use to possibly modernize her bike a little, let me know...
Thanks again....
Brian
P.S. I dont know the exact model of bike since its been a while since me and her rode. I will get more details soon when I pick up the bike from her to work on.

Hi Brian,
Yes, I have some wheels that you could have for a very reasonable price. I live in LA County (Whittier), but ride for an OC club (OCRR), so I could maybe bring them down to OC when I drive down for a ride with the club. The ones I have are Shimano hubs, either seven or eight speed.

Oh if it turns out she has a 6 speed- I've got a Dura Ace cassette that's in decent shape. I've also got some brake levers if she has down tube shifters. I may be even able to convince my dad to give up his Dura Ace rear derailleur- that thing is a beauty :) This is all stuff from his old steel frame bike that was almost full Dura Ace. It's all '95 and earlier, but I cleaned up everything a few months ago and stored it in plastic baggies.

Yes NECCROS,
I'm pretty sure they're 32 spoke 700C but they may be 36 spoke. The hubs are Shimano and the rims are Mavic, but not real expensive ones. Yes, they are aluminium alloy (not steel!).
Let me know, or send me a message via Bike Forum.

ok... first off THANK YOU all for responding and possibly helping out....I emailed my friend and she said its a Miyata 21... not sure if the 21 is the model but I know it has 21 speeds... she said it has 7 in the back and 3 in front and its probably a 90-91ish bike??
Im pretty sure its a 7 speed freewheel because I dont think they had cassettes yet back then... well I could be wrong, but I do know my 87 Centurion didnt!! :)
So if anyone knows how much this bike can be upgraded as far as modern components go, let me know.... but I would like to at least replace the freewheel, chain and probably the wheels. I am currently working on her mountain bike(thank God its only 5 years old! hehe) and my apartment cant handle more than 5 bikes at a time(My 4 and her 1) so I am going to work on it first then return it soon and grab the roadie and start wrenching on it and then I will have full details as far as what I really want to replace/fix...
Again thanks to all who stepped up with offers, Id love to say yes to them all but I really need to get the bike here and see what I will need..... The chain, freewheel and wheels are a definite....
Thanks,
Brian

Brian, they sure did have freehubs then in fact I bet that is what it is.
Good luck with your project. It is a pet project of mine as well to get people on bikes. Good job.

Right, the free-hub thing (I'd forgotten that's what they were called at first!), I remember when they were first introduced and they were in this cool wooden box that had "SHIMANO" in bold letters and all kinds of sprockets, lock-rings and spacers inside. Thanks for the peek down memory lane . . . :)
Have to look on ebay for one of those!

Ok... I got the bike and its got rust.. :( Rick: I definetly need those wheels... also I will be picking up those 105 brakes... Im gonna need them.... the cranks are ok but they have that oxidation that aluminum gets on it.... I need the following: a 7 speed chain, a rear 7 speed derailer.... overall the frames ok, but my only concern is some of the paint came off about the fork tabs and there is a little bit of rust and I just hope these dont crack on her....
Thanks again for helping....

UPDATE: I got the brakes from heddywouldgo(Sp?) and I got wheels from 1265 Lombardi!!!!!!! THANK YOU BOTH!!!!
Ok people, time to dig out those old parts lying around!! I still need the following to finish this project:
Shimano
8 speed cassette(something in the 12-27ish range)
8 speed DOWNTUBE index shifters
8 speed rear derailer
8 speed front derailer(Triple if possible)
8 speed triple cranks and BB(again if possible)
PLEASE post what you have and are willing to sell/donate and how much you are asking.....
Thanks again!!
Brian
Rick@OCRR, PLEASE hang on to those wheels for now, I decided I am going to get my friends bike up to 8 speed due to the wheels I got, but if I abandon that plan due to lack of parts, I will stick to 7 speed and WILL buy those wheels from you.

I just don't have an old parts collection, especially Shimano, that would help. But if you need to buy stuff, let me help.

Does the front derailleur need to be braze on or clamp on? I have a 35mm clamp style. I also have a 7sp RX100 triple that WILL work with 8sp if you want it.

I still need to figure out what size of front derailer I need... I do need a clamp on type(bottom pull/swing)... I need a set of calipers..:( I wanna figure out the clamp size without removing the current one if I can help it, but I may just have to...
I REALLY, REALLY need to find 8 speed downtube shifters... :( so does anyone know of shops around OC that will sell take off/used parts out of their parts drawers?? I know some do since I have bought MTB parts this way, but never road parts....
thanks....

Ok... I pulled the front derailer but no clamp size is stamped on it.... but the seatpost is a 25.8mm... so does that sound like a 1 1/8" clamp??
Also I need a 105 brake or even a pair....... turns out the one I have the bolt on it is WAY too short.. :( not sure if it was cut... so I need a replacement...
Thanks Again

I don't know about your derailleur. Unfortunately, the seat post is an inside measurement of the seat tube and the derailleur is an outside measurement of the seat tube. One would have to know the tube thickness. Can you measure the circumference (string perhaps) and divide by pi?
Also, you do know that the rear brakes have short bolts and the front have long ones (to get through the forks). Just checking.....

Yeah I know but one of the brakes has the bolt cut down it looks like and is just way too short... with this frame, I cant use the nut that goes into the frame(cant think of the name)... so that makes it even worse..... the other brake is fine but I may replace them both so they match...

Oh I see, they are sized for recessed nuts but you have to use standard nuts. OK.,.,,, (as well as cut even shorter perhaps).
As far as front vs. back, a few years ago a friend and me were each building fixed geared bikes and both wanted front brakes. He says he will buy a pair of brakes and we can split the cost. I said, sure, just send me the one with the longer bolt. Then it dawned on him. And he was a fairly capable wrench, just a brain lapse.
