Classic & Vintage - Peugeot update, pics

I thought I'd post a couple pics of the bike I've been bugging you guys about.

So far I'm at about $125 of my $200 budget, a good chunk of that being the Brooks saddle.

It's nothing special, but everyone likes pictures of just about anything, so here they are. (apologies for the crappy camera-phone pics)

That's not the chainring I'm using, but I threw it in the pic for the hell of it.

I haven't built the rear wheel yet, here's how I plan on lacing it:

That looks like an early 1970s UO-8, and a remarkably clean one, at that. I am not keen on crows-foot lacing, because half the spokes are perpendicular to the torque line, but chacun a son gout!

Please post again when you get it reassembled. The steering is a bit too slow for my tastes, but the two UO-8s I have owned have been extremely comfortable, stable, fun bikes.

1972 to be exact, my Mom bought it new and still had the original receipt and owner's manual, too.

What hubs and rims are you using?

I stripped-down my UO8, but maybe I'll re-build it fixed.

Mine looks just like that. I'm also planning on rebuilding it fixed or maybe with an internal geared hub. For now it's just kind of a beater bike. Good choice on the saddle, what did it come with? Mine came with a Ideale leather saddle that I really like. I wonder if it was a stock item or an add on. Does yours have an Ava stem? I've heard they are prone to failure, so you might want to replace it if that's the case. Here's mine by the way:

$125 seems to be the set price, as I was shopping for my first road bike about 1972/3. I think my Atala cost about $90-95. It was a gift from my dad, and he was tight with a buck.

Yes. I think that is characteristic of the UO8

Did that long seatpost come with the bike ?
If not, may I ask where you got it ? :D

It's in good condition but I really need to clean it and lube it a bunch.

Those brake levers only have a mini-rubber boot on the top part. Was that the norm back then?
What type of cranks were on them? Stronglight?
Where the drivetrain simplex and suntour?

When I bought my '72 UO8 brand new it had Rigida Chromlux steel rims (27"x1-1/4"), half hoods and sleeves on the brake levers typical of Mafac Racers of that vintage. The original crankset was a cottered steel Nervar crank. FD and RD were Simplex Prestige.

My moms yellow peugot with a leather saddle got sold in a yardsale when I was too young to have any interest in a 10-speed living in the country and mountain bikes having taken the world by storm. My dad's bike was also sold but it wasn't as nice. I think it might have been a centurion.

The rims were steel.
Those are MAFAC half hoods.
The original crank was a cottered steel Nervar.
The derailers were Simplex Prestge.

I'd like to politefully disagree on the wheel. I dont believe thats a modified 'crow's foot' lacing. True 'crows foot' lacing must have a spoke count divisable by 3. The pattern pictured is a 32 hole pattern.
