Classic & Vintage - Update on the Browning from Belgium & Gitane Olympic Record

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well, I dont know what to say. I've got to stop bringing junk home. I'm in the doghouse big-time right now...
The little woman is VERY unhappy with me...
I went back to that guy's house with the intention of only grabbing the Browning but, I couldn't resist this old POS Gitane Olympic Record II...

The Browning is very, very rough but, I think it will convert to a nice cruiser or foul weather ride.... Pivo stem, Mafac Racer's, etc...1973ish??
Too bad the original Ideale saddle is shot:(
There are some very, very strange parts w/ Belgian names and writing on them. Also a social security number (I think)

The Gitane is a 1976 and I hear these were made in Japan??:

And finally, I dont understand why this guy hoarded and neglected so many once-great bikes. Here is what I saw in the pile, beneath all of the cylinder heads that the fool threw on top:
Everything from a few would-have-been-nice Schwinns, a VERY interesting looking Urago, lower-end Raleigh's from the 60's, a Robin Hood women's model frame with all of the parts picked off it, a J.C. Higgins w/ very fancy crankset w/ a crowbar bending it all up, Motobecanes w/ bent forks: Grand Jubilee, Grand Touring, 2 could-have-been beautiful Schwinn Le Tours that he piled garbage on, I dont understand people like this...

He asked if I'd like to purchase the whole pile....

Hey, if you want to part with that nasty Ideale saddle, I would like to throw it on one of my non-riders just to give it a seat. Always wanted an Ideale, even a cracked one (Why do I like old castaway junk? I need therapy!).

PM me.

I like that Browning!

Wish it wasn't too dark right now to take pictures of the Olympic Record II that I was recently given. It has upright bars and the brakes are really weird. Anyone ever heard of Scott Super brakes? But they do have finned Matthauser pads!
I'll have to post pics when I get back home on Monday.

Yup. Scissor action brakes. I know I have seen a photo of them on someone's site.

Scott/Matthauser?
Had a set of those brakes on our custom Colin Laing tandem. The best brakes in its day (1980s) and as good as anything out there now, with the Matthauser (finned) pads.
Rear brake pads on that tandem lasted for 50,000 miles! And we do ride in rather hilly terrain in Arizona.

Got $20 for just a pair of Matthauser pads at recent swapmeet.

I've never dealt with a Browning, but the headset wouldn't be torqued too tight. It may be possible to loosen it with a Channellock that has plastic tape wrapped around its jaws to protect the chrome plating on the parts. The bearings may be loose ball.

No idea about the BB.
