Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Narrow shoes (besides Gazelles)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I should probably just bite the bullet and go clipless, but for now the strap rub between shoes and crank arms is driving me nuts. Couldn't really find much in a search about good, stiff, narrow shoes, and the ol' Gazelle standbys just don't fit my feets so well...
What else have you had luck with? Something one could technically skate in as well (I only own/wear one pair of shoes at a time, usually)? Or, conversely, what's a pedal with a bit more axle length?

These are way expensive for what they are but cheaper than going clipless.

I wear Puma Future Cats, the sole is pretty stiff and they're really comfy off the bike. They also look pretty decent and have held up just fine the two months or so since I got them. They are generally expensive but I scored some new ones on ebay for $40.

What are your current pedals?
And yeah, never noticed how much kneesavers cost, that's just out of line

Adidas tuscany's
or check out Diesel's i ride in diesels and I love them super light and narrow.

I can also vouch for the diesels. They are super slim, but the leather is thick enough on the sides so they won't immediately be devoured by the clips. Although I doubt you could skate in them.

Current pedals on road bike are some old Malliard CxC platforms, kinda similar to those MKS RX9s or whatever. I don't have such a problem with the Specialized track pedals on my fixed gear, as I think they have longer spindles. Yes, I'd rather just get some new pedals rather than the Kneesavers, but that is a good idea.

How can you buy these when you know they'll get ****ed up in clips? Don't those run, like, $90+ or something?
Mono black Chucks all the way.

eurosport (soccer.com) > indoor shoes
I have a pair of copa indoors and love them. The Nikes posted above are pretty bangin too.
shoes will always get screwed up. i love chucks, but sometimes it's nice to switch it up with something that has some padding. besides, just because you're always on your bike doesn't mean you can't wear nice stuff that's kinda pricey (if you enjoy wearing it). i mean i cater what i wear to being conducive to not being uncomfortable on my bike, but i wouldn't not wear a nice pair of shoes that i like wearing just cause they'd get beat up with straps/clips.
but as my roomie pointed out, men generally tend to be rougher on their shoes than the ladies. and wear them out much faster

I wear black and silver Pumas. I don't know what they are called, but I got them for 25 bucks at a Puma outlet. They are normally around 90. Nice.

The hard sole is good for pedaling.
Narrow enough for clips.
I wouldn't think these would be ideal for skate boarding, but they're doable.

Yeah, I was fortunate to get a pair with a "normal"
tongue on closeout at Dick's Sporting Goods for $20,
after a half-off coupon. I haven't seen them anywhere
since then.

Man, I wish I could find a pair of those. All of the ones I find are with the long tongue.

anything will get extra wear if you use them with clips. i got mine for $65 which is not much more than any of the adidas or nike shoes posted. probably half what you will spend on a pair of Diesel shoes (at least in the states) that was recomended earlier in the thread.
it was just a suggestion. super comfy, lightweight, and made 10X better than any nike shoe i have ever had. i ride my bike, play tennis and basketball, and are generaly rough on my shoes and they hold up great.
but now im just sounding like a puma spokesman. just defending my purchase =) which i have been more than happy with, and am buying another pair before spring.

Ah, the long standing-adidas/puma feud (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/5055542.stm). I have these (with white stripes on black). Although the upper is leather, the toe is rubberized like the sole, so wear from the clip is reduced, although you do get a little abrasion on the side. A black sharpie is good for hiding that if you're into appearances. I've had mine for over a year and had no problems. Cozy shoe.

Tigers are super narrow, especially the mexico 66 ones. They work really well with clips. Don't have much of a footbed though, would probably suck to skate in.
Sambas all the way.
http://dun.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pG01-214369reg.jpg
The only thing to watch out with Sambas is the older models, and some of the orginals "re-issues", have sketchy laces. Get rid of them right away and swap 'em out. They NEVER stay tied. I've had them get stuck in the chainweel of my roadbike before (good thing for freewheel). I knew a couple of people that worked for adidas and they pretty much verified the problem.
Or you could just get some Stawberry Shortcake bow biters.
I rock the Puma Mostro's. With the velcro laces. They're awesome. Yes.

Puma Ligas. They are identical in construction to Sambas, but they're leather around the heel instead of cotton or whatever it is on the Sambas. My Sambas got torn to hell there.

I picked them up at "DaZone" Queen Street. North side, before Bathurst.
Near the KFC (*gag* I hate using fast foot places as land marks). You know the one.

vans oldschool. low top for the summer, high top for the winter.
I wear addidas spezials and sambas , as well as chuck taylors and diadora road shoes with old school platform cleats
I like the road shoes best you have a stronger stroke more arch support and a narrower profile some people are affraid of bing strapped to their bike like that but I love it
clip-less bugs my knee

Those things are fine for road bikes or anything with a freewheel but on a fixie theyll also increase your chance of pedal strike quite a bit.
**** those things...just get some different shoes eh?

Ah, the long standing-adidas/puma feud (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/5055542.stm).
It's pretty crazy. Def true. In Herzo, you are either decked out in puma or adi, never both. Adidas used to be a client I worked on, the story goes a bit deeper, supposedly when one of the brothers went off to war, the other hooked up with the wife. That was sort of the nail in the coffin.
It was bad to wear Nikes infront of that client, but a slap in the face to sport Pumas.

How 'bout Vans slip-ons? The soles are pretty flimsy, but it seems like with some good clips and straps they'd be the ultimate. Nothing to get snagged on, no laces, etc....
john_and_off
12-17-06, 08:03 PM
i ride in slip-ons right now, but the soles wear out incredibly quickly. my sylvans just destroy them, and my feet are too wide to comfortably ride gr-9's.
as long as we're on the subject of pedals, i've been wondering if anyone here has any experience with the higher-end mks pedals? how wide are the rx-1, the custom nuevo, and are they comfortable with street shoes? and does anyone anywhere know anything about the unique custom other than that it is "an njs sylvan?"
totally off-topic, but i've been wondering...

Platform cleats? like cleats for platform pedals? What are they and what do they offer that clipless can't?
you have to adjust everything so that it is just right.... i like platform cleats and a traditional pedal because I can ride my bike with and without the special shoes also I have larger platform that my foot is pushing off and thirdly my knee cant twist to the side as easily as it used to so clipless is out of the question for me too many yars of skateboarding and bmx did me in
with traditional pedals keep your straps tight and adjust your toe in proper and you are set for life
Platform cleats? like cleats for platform pedals? What are they and what do they offer that clipless can't?
http://www.euroasiaimports.com/productcart/pc/viewCat_h.asp?idCategory=242
oh slotted cleats for cage pedals. I thought you where talking about something else for platforms. I still don't see how they are any better for your knees then clipless with zero float cleats.
And a lot of people aren't so much afraid of being strapped in but rather dislike the hassle of strapping in and out... I've found that it especially sucks on a fg unless you lean against something every time.
