Whereas I am bored at work, and
Its winter and bike riding is far beyond reasonable here, and
I was a wondering... What do you like best about being a geezer? And what do you like least?

Best - Perspective on things. With enough of life under my tires I can better determine whats important and what is not. Like PIE on a ride.

Worst - It takes a dang long time to get into any kind of shape, and it takes so little time go lose fitness.

Edit: Fixed some of my crappy grammar

Good: Having an actual life to look back on and having shared half of it with someone wonderful
Bad: Everything hurts. All the time.

My son lives in sunny southern Missoula Montana and winter never seems to slow him down. Snow shoe, snow board, cross country ski, hike....... Winter is what you make it.

Over here in Bozeman there is no ski season nor snowshoeing yet as the NW Part of the state has gotten all the snow so far. Then again, Maybe I'll head down to Yellowstone and try to take some pictures of some wolves or other critters.

Knowing if I race some young punk that I can't lose. If I win, it is great, if I lose - what do you expect?!

Good: Having an actual life to look back on and having shared half of it with someone wonderful ... Concur.

I would add being old enough to have seen my two sons grow into manhood (or reasonable facsimilie thereof).

Best = 'being' & still pondering the wonder of it all

Worst ... knowledge & realization that this too shall end one day......

>>> What do you like best about being a geezer?

Best. . .I don't have to prove a d@mn thing to anyone. . .anymore. . .forever, most of all to myself. Was it God or Popeye as said "[I]I Yam what I Yam."?

>>> And what do you like least?

Least. . .the realization that I cannot be this strong in body and spirit and this connecterd to God's Own Earthly Creation forever.

I suppose a corollary to this would be:

Good: Understanding the meaning of life
Bad: Understanding the meaning of life.

Good:
Not feeling the need to prove anything to anyone.
Feeling financially secure (using the figures that work for me).
Getting all those great senior discounts.:p

Bad:
Realizing how many years of my life I've wasted.

I would have to go along with this. Thank you for formulating and posting it. :)

On realizing I'm a geezer:

Yesterday for dinner along with my chicken, I had spinach, sauerkraut and brussels sprouts... and liked them. Something no self-respecting kid would ever do.

Best: Having enjoyed a lifetime always learning, learning, learning new things.
Worst: Finding it increasingly difficult to learn (and remember) new things.

[I don't use the "g" designation m'self. It's tough enough maintaining dignity in the claw-and-tooth world that generally despises age without giving the "opposition" UNFOUNDED fuel.]

Well. most everyone knows about my strong feelings about such words, but I am mellowing a bit in my older age. There is enough ageism (and perhaps at 67 I have experienced a bit more, I don't know) without adding fuel to the fire.

I guess the best thing about getting older is getting older as compared to the alternative. However, I have spent the last 5 days trying to make suitable arrangements for my mom, 93yo, broken wrist, who sort of wishes she would stop growing older. It is all a matter of perspective.

Too true. Really, anybody who belongs in this forum can't afford to get out of shape. Getting it back is just too hard. On the other hand, round is a shape.

Best ...... being able to afford something like this so the cold isn't such a problem. (see avatar)

Least...... trying to get strong enough to get it up a hill :)

I like not having to be in a hurry all the time. And I'm not interested in racing anyone. Having the freedom to fart whenever I want. Telling the doctor; I really don't care if my cholesterol is up. These and many more little pleasures. bk

I was able to make it to 55 without sitting in the family section for a funeral. It finally happened last week. We buried an infant grandson.

Dear Webist: Though you do not know me nor I you, you and your family have my sincere sympathy. My brother in law lost an infant daughter years ago. Burying the young is very very difficult, you have my prayers.

Hang in there, Web'. I just can't imagine what that must be like. Tho' I don't know you personally, I'm sending thoughts. [It's a drag sometimes here on BF that we all can't just pop over and give folks like 'Web a visit. I feel like we're all a sort of family.]

I used to wonder what people did before cell phones and microwaves.
Lately I'm wondering what people did before vicodin and non steroidal anti-inflamatories

When I was younger and flying a lot we used to laugh about the "geezers" at every airport - a couple of old timers sitting watching the planes coming and going, talking about the old days (hangar flying) giving rides to town and advice to pilots passing through. You could always count on help, advice or rides, etc .
All of a sudden a few years ago I realized that now I AM AN OLD GEEZER like these guys!
But I love it! The only difference is that I can't give many rides from the airport on my bike! But I can sure BS, tell lies and hangar fly with the best of them!
As I pedal along I comfort myself thinking - "Better to be over the hill than under it!" or "Better to be a has been than a never was!"
