Yep, every sub-forum has it & I'm starting this one. I'm seeing more & more people posting their Winter bikes so why not have 1 thread for them?

Post a pic & any mods/additions you've made specifically for Winter.

Here's mine, It just came in yesterday. Took me about 45 minutes to get it all squared away. It's a Motobecane 600 HT, it came stock with WTB Velociraptor tires which look like they will do great in the snow. I may buy a studded tire for the front. I've added the rear rack (as I'm a car-free commuter & need it) & the SKS E-Z mount front fender, I have a rear on order. I had a set of Nashbar Landcruiser Pedals I installed, real wide & lots-o-pins to keep my feet steady. I have plenty of lights from my other 2 bikes though I may add a stem mount for my headlight. So here's mine, where's yours? :D

^^^ Thats Nice.

Here is mine. It is a 1988 Custom handbuilt Rocky Mountain Wedge. It has seen a few changes over time, however I have turned it into my main Commuter now. It use to be my primary Off Road Bike, but I have a new one in the works.

My new snow commuter - a Raleigh One-way. Replaced the clip&strap pedals with my old M324s that are spd on one side, platform on the other, trashed the stock saddle of course for a Brooks B17, and swapped the stock Vittoria tires (that are heavy and roll like crap) with Kenda Klondike studs. Rear blinkies are mounted on my Pendle saddlebag (note the SQR mount) and I run an L&M Vega for my headlight. Only two decent snow days since I got it, but I may swap out the 16t freewheel cog with a 17.

this photo is from last November 24th (2005), this year as of today mid December; still no snow and 7 degrees Celsius.
Only change on the commuter for this year was back to riser bars

Long Haul Trucker set up with skis. And a pic of it without the skis on a different ride.

If I was doing a LOT more serious snow riding like I did in the 80's I'd have a more upright bike, for easier skid turns.

My bike set for winter, well just fenders for now. Fixed 42/14, once the snow arrives, 38/14 with knobbies if needed.

It is more of a work out than putting studs on my fixie touring bike but this way I can leave slicks on the normal commuter and ride the monster bike in bad weather.
The Pugs is also my MTB and off-road winter bike (with a different gear ofcourse).

^^^ Classy!!!

Never seen an inline lever used like that. Looks like it works alright.

yairi

Yeah it works pretty slick :)

^^Word. First fixie I've seen on here that I can actually visualize myself riding in the winter.... maybe. :)

Fixed Up North

That might be the best looking IRO I've seen yet. I've never been too big a fan of them (don't tell the SS/FG forum), but I am coming around as of late. Yours has made me a fan. Do you have any other pics?

Shiznaz

Yeah that IRO makes me think of some cool Saab rally car. My winter fixed gear makes me think of McDonalds extra value meals or some rusted out red honda civic customized with duct tape and ford escort parts.

Cheers guys :) couple more pix at http://eternityfuture.net/?p=32

I like those handlebars.

That does it. I'm cross posting your bike without permission on the SS/FG photo page. If I burn in hell so be it.

Lurker1999

I have nothing fancy since it's being left out on the front porch. An old Mongoose S20 with a non-deadly rigid fork transplanted from another bike. I did just get a set of Nashbar studded tires delivered but the weather here is too warm for those just yet.

I would sure like to try that Surley Pugsley in the snow we have been getting here :)

here's mine (the all-aluminum marin (san anselmo 2000)). i changed the headset/stem/handlebar and installed nokian w106 (700c) tires, fenders and home-made mud flaps and "christmas tree" decorations...

in order to prevent questions on my rear mud flap, i added a picture of my previous winter bike that contains a hint... :D for the "chest-thumping" winter commuters (in reference to another thread in this forum...:)), you have to know that she handled her first -30C commute before her first birthday...

KrisA

Here's my winter beater. It's a bottom of the line Norco mountain bike on it's third winter. My previous winter beater turned to total rust, this one is fairing much better, but still going through lots of parts. The seat/post came off my Kona Jake the Snake. The rear wheel was the original from my wifes Kona Lana'i, the original was destroyed after 1.5 winters. The front wheel and crank, modified into a 42 tooth single, are the originals off my Rocky Mountain. BB was replaced after winter number one with a Shimano UN25 which has held up well. Lots of lame stickers on it to make it look ugly and deter thieves, the Dora and KD stickers were courtesy of my son. :D Nokian 296 Extemes have been going strong for 3 winters, studs look great, but the rubber is starting to decay. Planet Bike fenders keep my dry in the slush puddles.

I plan on making this bike a singlespeed once this drivetrain (it's second) is finished. I'd also like to replace the horrible fork with a rigid and the steel riser bar with a flat bar. I figure doing this would save about 8 lbs. The stock fork has got to weigh about 8, it is 100% steel construction!

Total investment is about 500 bucks, with 200 of that being the tires.

We've only seen a few days of snow so far. That has been followed by several weeks of warm temps. I expect we will see much more come Janurary. Cleveland usually gets plenty of snow but we have warmer tempertures than places like Minnesota and Canada, so the snow doesn't usually stay long.

:)
that's true, it was "new" when i took the picture... well, new like no winter. i bought it used on the web two years ago...

my first winter bike was a cheap steel tank (bought used for 20$. must have been over 45 pounds with its big innova front wheel (well nothing like the big foot pictured before. ()). i decided to go for lighter/faster for the second edition... i tried to get almost as "aerodynamic" as i am in summer...

ok, the bike cost me more than 10 times more and the hakka tires are twice as expensive as the innovas but i think that its all worth it!

cheers

OK, Here's mine but it's no where in the same league as some of these mothers. ;)

C'mon. All those bikes look new...

Is there some rule that I can't buy a new bike for my winter bike? Is there some rule that says I gotta keep my old one, rather than give it away to my brother? Are you a shill for the thrift store? ;)

CB is right, not much winter here yet, but it's a comin, bout as certain as death and taxes.

Thanks guys, I really don't like riding it nearly as much as my Pilot and it is pretty damn ugly, but I do enjoy the "whhhrr" of my Nokians above 20 mph. :)

I plan to flip the handlebars upside down to lower the riding position.

Looking suspiciously like my summer bike with Nokians and fenders.

As for the "looking too new bit", I can throw smear more frozen mud on it if it makes a difference.

well, that's more than logical... (i however hate what salt does to nice bike like yours...) i personally turn my winter bike into a rain bike for the three other seasons (i just switch the tires to some lightly threaded ones). so i have a road bide (no fenders and slick tires) and this one, both always ready to go. just have to check the forecasts (and the nexrad radars...).

ghettocruiser

Compared to racing in mud, very little... 4 winters on it now.

Although I'm pretty good at keeping it washed when the salt trucks are rollin'.

I've posted this picture like 4 times now, sorry for the redundancy if you've already seen it. It still needs fenders and I want some more narrow tires, it's just too slow like it is. I will probably ditch the heavy rack/basket too, I put that on when I was using it to take my kids to the park and for runs to the store. I was so wiped out after riding 15+ miles in ice and snow, I'm thinking some narrow but knobby tires, maybe with studs. Needs fenders too.
