Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - an unforseen build issue

Related to the "crank/chainring option" thread...

I started building my new IRO Jamie Roy this afternoon, and everything was looking great until the cranks went on. I haven't even torqued down the drive-side crank bolt all the way and the spider tabs are already touching the chainstay! I'm using sugino 75s and the matching bottom bracket (which I believe is symmetrical, and installed correctly, anyway). I have heard of people filing down the back of the crank spider, but these cranks don't have much room to mess with that without effing the chainring bolts.

I noticed that the off-the-rack Jamie Roy has a 130 BCD crank. Will it even be possible to run 144 BCD with 42mm chainline on this frame? Am I going to have to buy a new crankset?

This might have been relevant information before I bought the frame, dammit.

Anyone have any experience with this particular setup?

I have sugino 75's on a jamie roy and none of the problems you are describing... maybe the spindle length on the bb is too short?

I would call Tony and see if he's heard about any problems with this combo. Also, get a caliper and measure where the chainline is sitting now. This will tell you if the setup is even right.

I have filed down the "horizontally sticky-outy" tabs on a road double crankset with great success. Filing the "vertically sticky outy" ones seems dodgy as hell though.

the Jamie roy has clearance for 37c's
but doesnt' have the radically shaped chainstays that say a steamroller has.

The BB and cranks are technically both used, but are in good shape. I just took them off of my conversion this morning, and put them back on after I found out they wouldn't work. I don't have calipers to measure, but the chainline on my miyata road frame is pretty good. I'm using the 109mm 75 BB, so the spindle is definitely the right length...

Gregtheripper: are you using the 75 track cranks or the road version (which I believe has a 130mm BCD)?

Well, regardless of why this isn't working, I'm going to need a different crankset for this frame. Will the sugino RD's with 103mm bottom bracket work? I could just buy the IRO crankset, but I don't particularly like the looks of them. Any first-hand experience?

This is probably the case. In addition to the tire clearance, the rear dropouts are inexplicably spaced at 130mm. I still love the frame, but I wish I would have known this would happen before I embarked on an unnecessary super-overhaul of my miyata.

People have gotten a lot of different stuff to work, I didn't see any 144's but then again I'm not exactly the go-to guy if you want to talk about real track cranks. Lots of people seem to do quasi-cross builds on this bike since it takes big tires/fenders, so there are a of smaller chainrings. What is it you can get down to with 144, like 45t or something?

^^^thanks. I was just looking at those. I'm planning on making this my winter/bad weather bike with either knobby tires or fenders. I was only trying to use track cranks because that's what I had to work with from my temporary (gasp) conversion.

I believe that was exactly the reason Tony had to change cranks for the nolageek project aka Katrina bike project.

why are there plenty of jamie roys on velospace.org that run sugino 75s on this frame? i am confused..

anyone have IRO's number? Tony hasn't responded to 3 of my emails and its been weeks. IM kind of dissapointed.
