Parents gave me an early Christmas present. It's a French Press! This is the best coffee I've had in a while, and it's so simple!

How does French press work?

And how does it differ from brewed?

Brewed coffee drips water into basket of coffee and it steeps only long enough for it to "drip" out the bottom.

A press pot (or french press which is the same but works backwards) allows you to put coffee straight into hot water and steep it completely for exact right amount of time. Then you press the coffee down and pour it out (or pull it out with coffee grounds on ringer if its a french press rather than regular).

It's widely considered to be the 2nd best way you can make regular coffee. The only way that is supposedly considered better is a vacuum pot, but those are expensive, cumbersome and messy. I only use a press pot nowadays too.

Sure, House is cool. I lover the one episode where the oncologist was spinning up doobs for a patient because 'they couldn't roll' and House tried to pocket one.

Hate to rain on your french press, but remember those reports about coffee causing cancer? Turned out that the only kind of coffee that MIGHT cause cancer is coffee brewed with a french press - something about that wonderful flavor also allows something to remain in the coffe that promotes the big C.

Do your parents really like you?

French press here every morning. Simple math. Want stronger coffee? Leave it in the press for a longer time.

I think there was a study recently that indicated researchers do cause cancer in laboratory animals. All we have to do is stay away from the d@mn researchers and we're good...

Meat and animal byproducts have been shown to be more cancer causing than just about any other thing we ingest. I'd go complete vegan before coffee started being my largest concern.

KT - just remember whilst vegie munching - merely organic does not equal safe. You have to look at where your vegies are grown, as many plants (tomatos, celery, carrots & some leafy greens) will pick up and store pollutants from the air. So if you favorite vegies are grown in a highly populated area, with plenty of nearby traffic, you'll get a dose of absorbed exhaust in your munch.

It doesn't matter. Regardless, people are living to be old farts, and we're cyclists, so we have that on our side. That said, I'm going to go make some coffee!
