Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Mavic 631 cranks.

Whats the general opinion on Mavic 631 cranks. I think they look sweet and with the single bolt system and semi-adjustable chainline could make a good set of fixie cranks.

They take standard road chainrings... you can just swap em out.

Stiffest cranks I've ever ridden. Totally rad, but won't take a chainring smaller than 48t. Adjustable chainline?

New pet peeve: People using words like "hideous" in their "humble opinion". You're welcome to your opinion, but if you want to be humble about it, try something like "not attractive" rather than hideous, and if you're not interested in presenting your opinion humbly, don't pretend to do so.

"Ugly" seems to be the public opinion then because I don't like them, either...
But if you like them, why not? I admit it's a nice touch that the chainring bolts are hidden.

Semi-adjustable chainline because you cann add spacers to bring the cainring closer to the frame, and you can't see the difference, unlike normal road doubles.

They are hot, hot cranks. Ugly? wtf!

As for the chainline, is the mavic bb like phil or Miche, i.e. 2 adjustable cups?

Mavic made a cartridge bottom bracket that didn't use the threads in the frame. Instead, the cartridge is threaded and one tapered lockring threads on each side, sandwiching the BB shell in between. It's adjustable to an extent.

The downside to this, is that the BB shell has to have tapers cut on the sides, using a special tool. The upside is that you can use it in a shell with completely destroyed threads of any type. They are hard to find, and not all shops will have the tool to cut the tapers in the shell. I've heard that they put some strange stresses on the BB shell also.

I have a set kicking around but I'll never use them. They are neat, but not my thing. IMHonestO, they look like pie plates.

the driveside cracked where the arm hits that crazy external spider.

they were really cool for 6 months before they died...

btw they cracked in use as a geared crankset so they might not be the strongest (or i got a bunk set).

i still run the rear d fom that gruppo on my gf's commuter. nice stuff!

I've never used them but I've always liked them and I have never used a Mavic product that has not been of the most exceptional quality...

Upon first look, I didn't think you could get any chain ring in the 40's past the crank spiders. This is a question of mere aesthetics. Not my style, but rock them if you dig them. If they are Mavic, then they are probably great cranks.

Let us set aside speculation. I own these cranks, and I have owned other sets of them. They are my favorite cranks for the following reasons: stiffness, q-factor, straightness (easy to sight if it's crooked), looks, rarity (in that order). They don't look good on every bike, but I ride stupidly ridiculous pursuit bikes, so what do I know (PS have you seen my ridiculous tights?).

They don't take anything smaller than 48t, but they're pretty much the stiffest cranks ever. They don't come in black, but they take a powdercoat (though my guy said he had some trouble with bubbling, who knows). Supposedly, they come in lengths other than 170 but that's just hearsay from one dude. I would kill for a 180mm set. Please let me know if you come across a pair.

There's some 172.5s on UK ebay at the moment and a friend of mine has 165s, although one of the chainbolt threads has stripped a bit.
