Northeast - W&OD Trail: Piney Branch Bridge, what news?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Winter miles and training usually have me on the WOD 6 days a week. What's up with the Piney Branch Bridge detour? I NEVER see any work, workmen, equipment, nothing around this site.

It's annoying because that bridge is near the center of a perfect 3 mile section I would like to use for my fitness test, however the results would be somewhat (!) skewed because of the cyclocross section as I pick my way through loose gravel.

No news that I can find on the NVRPA website or the www.wodfriends.org. It is a bit of a pain but at least its better for us the the rollerbladers I see trying to crawl up the gravel.

I was out there a couple of weeks ago. Doesn't look like much has been done since they stabalized the abuttment.

You might have to do your fitness tests in Ashburn.

2nd cc's suggestion. I use this four mile route: Mile 23.5 (just west of the Ruritan Circle road crossing/West Church overpass), across Rt 28 and the bridge to Ashburn (Mile 27.5). One road crossing at Smiths Switch Station (just enough traffic and poor sight lines that you do want to slow and be ready to full stop). If you start your "run" at Sterling Blvd, it's about 5 miles to Ashburn with 2 street crossings (Ruritan Circle and Smiths Switch). Once you're in Ashburn, you can do various loops on the wide new roads.
