Bicycle Mechanics - Star nut or not....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I know on my carbon forks on my road bike, I could not use a star nut. (can't remember name of that part off-hand). So is there a reason to use a star nut on any fork?

Some carbon forks use a compression lug instead of a star nut whereas others have aluminum inserts that have welded-in star nuts that are glued into the carbon steerer. The compression lugs and inserts have a dual purpose in that in addition to providing something for the headset cap to tighten into for preloading the bearings they reinforce the carbon steerer where the stem is attached.
These two pieces of hardware -- with their added weight, complexity and cost -- are not needed on a steel or an aluminum steerer where the simple and inexpensive star nut suffices.
