I heard somewhere that if nipples were colored they had to be aluminum because brass can not be colored. Anyone know if this is correct?

probably. I've seen old school painted nipples on BMX bikes though. You can get black brass nipples now too.

not sure if it is correct, but i only ever see black or silver brass nipples

Actually, that is correct. The colored nips are anodized.
