I can't even ride on the trainer without the damn neighbors getting pissed off. It's 8:00PM *******S, you're not 90, you're not trying to sleep. Let me ****ing ride!

Ummmmm so how do they know you are on your trainer? You got the curtains open and going commando?

Or is it THAT loud?

Falkon
12-18-06, 07:12 PM
it's a magnetic trainer. It's not that loud. I'm upstairs, but jesus ****ing christ if I heard someone running on their treadmill at 8:00pm I wouldn't give a ****. You live in a ****ing apartment, you have to learn to deal, or I'm going to really make your life hell.

If it's not "quiet time" and you're not beating on the floor with a sledge hammer I say go for it. I live in a downstairs apartment and while I don't enjoy when the apartment above me is making a lot of noise, I deal with it. Now, you try doing that at 12:30 on a weeknight, and we're gonna have words.

When you're living in an apartment you need to just deal with the noise. Tell them to STFU! Crank some Pantera next time you ride it.

jyossarian

Get carpeting or an foam exercise mat to attenuate the noise transmitted and ride your heart out. If the guy still comes up to complain, tell him to eff off.

Well, since the title of the thread wasn't specific, I'm going to add my own rant/whine/***** in here. Just went to change the ink tanks on my printer and the damn yellow one wouldn't fit. I thought they put the wrong one in the box, but NOOOOO.... stupid me grabbed 3 of the right part number and one wrong one. Someone must have put this one back on the wrong hook. My own stupid fault for not noticing it but damn it's aggravating!

Falkon

ARGH! I've done that. You don't even feel like going back for the right one either.

phantomcow2

You may be able to get a mat or something to go underneath the trainer, absorbing some of the vibrations a bit.

Falkon

I'm looking for something. I thought there was an exercise mat around here somewhere.

Sorry dude....I once had an old neighbor that fussy too.

I just got a new dog at the time and worked night shift. So I put him up in the newpaper covered bathroom and put a radio on VERY SOFT just so he had some noise.

I got a nasty gram in the morning about how she couldn't sleep because of my loud radio.

It was so low, with the bathroom door closed as it was, I couldn't hear more than about 5 feet away from the door. She claimed to hear it through the bathroom door, house door, her house door and bedroom door so loudly that she couldn't sleep.

Check the major cycling vendors online. I know what you are talking about, I saw that mat on one of those websites.

jyossarian

You can get those mats anywhere. Sometimes they're called yoga or pilates mats which are light and thin and not as absorbent. Just get something cheap. If he still complains, plant some drugs in his apt. and call the cops.

Falkon
12-18-06, 08:40 PM
trust me, I wouldn't have to plant them.

You need a sheet of rubber with a sheet of viscoelastic foam on top followed by a sheet of hard aluminium. This effectively isolates both the low and high frequency conductive noise transfer. We made some of this stuff at work for our motor mounts.
Go to mcmaster for some real industrial strength stuff.

It'll be pretty funny if you got em ear plugs for christmas.

Give em the earplugs, and a gift certificate for a ***** in case the ear plugs don't send the message.

I've got the perfect solution to your problem.
Order up some hard core porn, crank the bass and let the fun begin.
Do it every night at 8:00pm
when they finally approach you about it tell them that since you can't ride your triner you've decided to take in some cultural films.
See how fast they forget about the trainer noise.

Falkon
12-19-06, 07:09 AM
nah, I decided to be passive aggressive about it and just play loud music and walk on my heels the rest of the night. I'm going to spin again when I get home from work. I'll concede to winding it down earlier, but I paid for the trainer, and god damn it, I'm going to use it. If he gets pissed at me training at ~5:30, I'm just going to yell "Get a bicycle, *****"

BTW you can buy the mats from wal-mart for $20

When in the middle of a room the trainer may be louder than near the wall. The floor vibrates more away from the wall and may have a big effect on the noise.

So put your speakers facing down in the middle of the room when you want to get revenge ! :D

I'm not 90 I get up at 3am so I am trying to sleep by 8pm. Work with your neighbors

Well, he doesn't. For God sakes, you live in an apartment. At least two other people have dogs. What I need is a good sine wave generator for the PC to see how low my subwoofer will hold a note.

12-19-06, 03:37 PM
What you need is a good sound-reinforcement TL subwoofer (preferably with a 30ft TL tunnel), a Crown K2 amplifier and a 20-30hz bass sweep. Enjoy as the entire place is shaking something awful.

Summed up my exact thoughts.

I can't ride when it's light out, because I'm usually doing that work thing. It's warm THIS WEEK. Not even two weeks ago, the high was 35. I may be crazy, but I don't enjoy riding when it's dark and freezing all the time. Whether I like it or not, traffic still exists, and it's a much better option to watch Breaking Away and ride on the trainer. That's right, I watch Breaking Away while riding on the trainer. I'm that awesome.

Whadda think I was being a wise guy? I dealt with that crap from neighbors for years. Got pretty sick and tired of it from both ends. It was to the point I QUIT WHINNING about it and finally did something. Now you can do one of two things. Post threads about rude neighbors and and noisy radios or get off your a$$ and do something about it. I chose to do the latter.

You're right! You're absolutely right. I'm going to go get a loan with the credit I don't have and put the down payment I don't have on a house I can't afford. This is the best option for someone in college of course.

...dumbass.

I got some mats from my parents' house to dampen the vibrations. We'll see what happens.

You might also try a quieter tire on your bike while it's on the trainer. City Slicks are pretty quiet.

By the way, it is a LOT easier to get a mortgage for a home loan than it is to get the typical "screening" that some of these apt. complexes do. I found the process surprisingly easy, quick and painless. No money is needed these days as well, but I chose to put up $2000 earnest money and wrote in my contract that seller pays "Any and all closing costs". That way no cash is needed. Try it.

Actually have you tried looking at tires specifically made for trainers and rollers? You can get a cheap wheel with the tires and pop it on when you need to.

Let the kid whine, who are you, the whine police? So you coughed up 2 grand a bought some dumpy house to not deal with neighbors, good for you. Some people like where they live too. I like living in NYC and if you can pony up $200000 cash and an $800000 mortgage, I would love a decent home around here too.

I only paid $117,000 for mine. That includes the heated garage. I'm going to walk over to the bike shop and get a tube now. :D

I must know more about what to do here.. Trying to only spend about $300-400 that i can use for a bit then resell on ebay or something.. :)

Ideas?

Less vibration/noise felt in the morning but after sunset its going to be annoying to others. even if you put some mat underneath your trainer. Still this noise will exist and travel thru floor and walls down under your apartment.
