Please? Does anyone know where I can get one? I can get a hold of an NOS Sturmey Archer 5-speed hub, but it needs a 40-hole rim,a nd all I have is 36ers. It must be an English thing.

Tandem Hub? Look at tandem parts! Be prepared for STICKER Shock!
Wheelsets for moderately loaded touring.

Phil Wood tandem cassette 40 hole hubset, 145mm rear axle, Wheelsmith DB14 spokes in front, DH13 spokes in back, Mavic A719 (was T520) rims: $ 759.50

White Industries Jockey hubset, Velocity Dyad 40 hole rims, Wheelsmith DB-14 spokes in front and back (sub 325lb teams): $ 632.60

White Industries Jockey hubset, Velocity Dyad 40 hole rims, Wheelsmith DB-14 spokes in front, DH-13 spokes in back (over 325lb teams): $ 634.60

Wheelsets for fast road riding and weekend touring. The 22mm wide Mavic T217 rims work best with tires 35mm or smaller. If you ride 28mm or 32mm tires, these rims are ideal.

Uhhh TOM! He was just looking for the rim not a whole wheelset:D :p

Duane,
Try Harris Cyclery (http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/rims/590.html) the link is to a 26" rim, a quick search didn't show a 40 hole in 27", are you dead set on that size or would a 26" or 700c work? They are going to be hard to find.

Aaron:)

Ow, my wallet hurts....:)

Well, after seeing the eye-popping prices, maybe a 4-speed hub with a 36 hole hub would make more sense. I figured "36 hole, 40 hole, what's the difference?". Apparently about $100 or so.

But thanks for the input. I'll probably go for the used 4-speed SA hub.

You have a line on a 36h 4 speed!!! They're even scarcer than 27" 40h rims. I've never seen one offered for sale. I've a couple of 40h and a couple of 28h (for Moultons)

40H 27" rims are scarce and expensive but Sun CR-18s in 700 or in the British 26" (ISO 590) are no more expensive in 40 hole than any other drilling.

Another option is to stick the S5 innards into a pre-April 1984 36H AW shell. All years of 26" Schwinns and Raleighs after 1972 generally came with 36h wheels. I've bought 6 NOS 28 hole S5s and swapped the shells.

Earlier today someone told me of a source for calculating the right spoke length for using 40h hubs and 36h rims. If it pans out, I'll pass it on.

Sometimes you can get a deal on a 4 speed if it lacks the indicator rods, which are virtualy unobtainable (at least on the left side of the Atlantic). The simples solution then is to convert it to an S5 5 speed. I have all the parts needed for the conversion.

Yeah, I know, but if they sell whole wheelsets, I'm sure a rim only purchase can be arranged.

Back in the good old days (50's and 60's) it was common practice for english bikes to come in a "32-40" combination, ie 32 hole front and 40 hole rear. I guess they thought that most of the weight was in the back or something. My 62 falcon came that way, but not with alloy rims. I have seen these combos in 700c rims (I purchased a set from BicycleClassics back in the mid-90's, old alloy Clement rims, pretty cool looking). These days 40 hole are pretty much considered to be a touring type rim,and they are usually pretty wide and sturdy, as a result. Also, it is pretty hard to find a 32 hole rim in the same "model" of rim as the 40 hole touring model, whatever the manufacturer, even in 700c. Good luck in your search for 27's!!!!

As MnHPVA guy said, the Sun CR-18 700c rim comes in 40-hole drilling: http://harriscyclery.net/itemdetails.cfm?catalogId=39&id=1751. I've seen 40-hole 27" rims come up for auction on eBay, but not often. And even less so for 27" Dunlop Special Lightweight 40-hole steel rims.

Thank You!!! Got both of them that were available, and the pirce was only $35 per. Not a bad deal.
And sorry for any confusion about these hubs. Turns out that because of these rims being on sale (and now purchased), the fella I was getting the hub from is going to leave it laced to the wheel it's already on. I didn't know the hub was already built up. So the deal now is I'll give him the rims,a nd he'll give me the ready-to-go wheel/hub along with the shifters. Such a deal!
You guys rock, by the way.:)
