Good price!!
Let me know how you like it.
My understanding is that Google Earth will download Garmin onto the satellite image.
Now that would be cool.. zoom in just close enough to see ALL your rides!

hhmmmmm... 305 where's the credit card.. now Drew, step AWAY from the card....:D

Oh good!!
too many Q's...
My main is, can it be downloaded onto a Sat.
image ( google earth) to view the rides? I assume it's on my computer, not on their server.
Or what type of map do you get?
Here is a Sat Image of Aliso-Woods... where we rode a couple weeks ago!
Now THAT would be cool..

I was just looking at that thread earlier today. Do you think the motionbased subscription is worth the money, or are you happy with the free version?

yes.... motion based allows you to see the satellite... here's aliso woods (http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/invitation/email/accept.mb?senderPk.pkValue=18816&unitSystemPkValue=2&episodePk.pkValue=1724917)...

if you go to map player.... then on the left choose steallite for the "backgroud" you will see the satellite image and your route and it's on their server... not your computer (i think you can do a map in garmin's software if you have a garmin map, which i do cuz i have another garmin gps) you do need to use both programs to get all the info... i.e. motionbased doesn't have cadence and their elevation is WAY off... so you need to use garmin's program that comes with the edge to get your cadence and the proper elevation)

i, personally don't think the normal price is worth if for motionbased... since i've been using it since february and only have the free version.... you get to see your last 10 rides uploaded.... however it does save all your rides so if you ever become paid... you get them all... i do think i'm planning to get the subscription before the end of the year cuz it's 2 for 1.... still deciding though... cuz that's still $200 out of pocket for the two of us.... but the free version works fine.... you get to see the map player and all your info.... i transfer it all over to bikejournal anyways...

it's a well known fact that i DESPISE the HORRIBLE calorie counter.... i just don't understand why garmin can't get it right????????????? they have ALL the tools..... but the insist on using speed only! DUMB DUMB DUMB!

it's really more toy than any of us need..... for me the map player is the coolest part.... especially on away rides

Nada, nothing came up..
Although I did see alittle colored map of the ride!
Can you post a pic with it mapped?

Sadly, there is only one calorie counter that is always, invariably accurate.

Hi Brandy,

I highly recommend another program called SportTracks (http://www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/index.html). The software is shareware so you can try a fully functioning version before you buy it. In fact, like BikeForums, you don't have to pay at all if you don't feel that it's worth the price.

It has many useful features that you won't find in motionbased and if you decide to pay for the software, updates are free and there is no subscription fee. You can also create fly-through views in conjunction with Google Earth.

I tried motionbased and the fee structure turned me off as well as the fact that your data gets stored on the internet -- no internet connection, no data. :(

Anyway, give SportTracks a try and see what you think.

BTW, I ended up paying for the software because I think that it is very good. :)

for the garmin i only use the free motion based account...i pretty much just use it to save my routes on google earth. some of the other stuff it has is cool, but not worth paying for. youll be happy with the garmin. ive had mine for a little less than a year and i still think it rocks!!!! and it isnt THAT big....its not itty bitty, but not huge either...one bummer is that for all of yer doubles yer gonna need a way to power it past its 12 hour battery lifespan....either that or get REALLY fast...

realistically it is about 8 hours... Maddmike built a power unit for himself, he can help you set everything up.

i have a cool little battery unit for mine....never maxed it out but i know itd get me 20 hours or so on top of the 8-12 that it can do.....and itll do 8+ hours fer sure...this i know from experience!!!!

I got an APC USB power extender thing for like 8 bucks. It 's tiny and sits in my bento box. I tried it once to make sure it works, but my rides usually aren't more than 4 hours. I'd bring it if I was expecting a 6+ hour ride though.

The garmin is a great gadget, the data it collects is awesome. Sadly, no one really has great software to take full advantage of it. I paid for the motionbased upgrade with the 2-1 deal they're running, I've tried sporttracks and the free software that comes with the garmin. What I really want is software that'll let me lasso a section of ride and have it calculate the metrics based off the data in that custom segment. That way I can get fairly precise time / hr / climb stats for calculating power outputs etc. (geeky yeah)

The google earth thing is pretty neat, but it just lays out the route, it'd be cool to get stats in there.

Anyway, with the way it seems these things are taking off, better software shouldn't be too far away.

you need to look at and try both motionbased and sporttrack.... i tried sporttrack and didn't care for it... imuch preferred the free motionbased..... plus i like that my info is out there on a server in case my computer crashes (the numbers are also on bikejournal and i get a print out at the end of the year) but it's whatever works for each person!

ronjon10

Thanks. Okay, maybe a stupid question, but since I don't have my Edge yet, I have no clue. Can I use both motionbased and sporttrack at the same time (same ride data) so I can compare and see which I prefer?

caligurl
12-21-06, 09:14 AM
yes... you can use both.... (i still have sporttrack on my computer from when i tried it!)

but now i just upload to garmin's traning center (it automatically does that when i plug it in) and then open the MB thingy and upload to there.... you would just have one more step.... uploading to sporttrack!

yep.... gonna need a battery! and you do need garmin's software if you are tracking elevation... motionbased is WAY off! (way too high of numbers).... so you need to get your ride elevation from garmin's training center (as well as cadence, if you track that)

just be careful plugging it it on the fly... that's how i fried my first one... decided i'd seen enough of the low battery message and plugged it in.... fried the edge! (that's also why i have a back up wired computer on my bike... cuz i don't like doing organized rides without knowing where i am mileage-wise and how far i have to go!)

(it is a cool little toy... but some things about it really ARE a PITA!)

Thanks Cali, but it say it does not work with the new upgraded IE7. Only IE6, or firefox, or adobe AGV.
And IE7 is just so cool too!!

It does work w/ IE7, but you do need to download that adobe software (which doesn't work w/ firefox) to make it work properly.

Go to this page, download and install the adobe svg software. You can then use IE6 or 7 to view the interactive maps on the motionbased site.
