I think I'm going to get my boyfriend a saddle for Christmas but I need a little help with the decision. Are you more interested in a stylish saddle or a lightweight saddle? The Swallow is way too expensive so it's between a Brooks Swift or a Selle Italia SLR with Ti rails. And also, if you've ridden both... Which rides better?
Most of us like those really big gel covered saddles.
the more springs the better.

So you're saying I should sew two SLR gels together?

First off, what Kind of bike is it? I think a Brooks looks sort of silly on carbon TT bike, and an SLR is kind of ridiculous on an old English 3-speed.
I habe the slr but it is under another name and a quarter the price go to price pint it is the sette race ti saddle 25 bucks and I have em on two of my bikes bout a yr old and not looking to shabby

I would go for a Brooks Team Pro. The ti model is slightly more than the Swift, or go for the cro mo for quite a bit less and get some other bike goodies with the leftover $$$. Nobody who is using a Brooks should be too concerned with weight.

As for the bike he has, it is an old Gianni.
And as for the team pro, I know he wants a saddle with a slimmer profile and ti rails. He really wants the swallow but I figure he'd appreciate the Swift too. I figure if I got him the Brooks he wouldn't care as much about the weight.

Oh, your bf is the dude with the star-spangled Gianni Motta?
A Brooks or Selle Regal would look equally nice. A white SLR would be cool too. That frame could go either way, so it's up to you to determine what he would find more comfortable.
Oh, by the way, the term is "classic vintage" Gianni..."old" bike sounds like something used as a planter in the garden, not a handmade Itailan track bike!

Haha, his isn't the star spangled bike...and yes, vintage is what I meant

Is that a catheter on the side of that rubber toilet? That would make 100+ mile tours more bearable, to be sure.

Well if he wants a swallow he's probably into the whole butt-molding aspect of the brooks so I'd go for the swift.
You do know about the butt-molding right?

I'm pretty careful with a knife and I've thought about that...
Are there any good sites online with perhaps detailed instructions?
I know you need a knife, lace, and polish...
And do Pros come in Honey?

Don't get someone else a saddle unless:
1. you know it is the exact model they want.
OR
2. you constantly stress that you won't be hurt if they return it and just want their butt to feel good.
OR
3. you don't really care about them and just want to look like you're trying.
saddles are very personal things. Is this an all weather bike? How well is a brooks going to do in the lovely pnw winters?
Hahaha
This thread is a perfect example of why I love this forum. One joke just keeps getting better and better.

I am pretty sure he would like a swift or swallow from the drool practically streaming out of his mouth when he sees either, plus a verbal explanation of how much he wants one.
I definitely have thought about the weather issue with the leather... especially honey brown. He still seems to be all about the Brooks - even after having the pants staining conversation.
Plus well, I don't really care about him and need a breakup gift to soften the blow. I figure this would be good right?

The search button will provide you will a ton of how-to's/advice.
It's really pretty easy, about the same difficulty level as alterations on a pant hem.
I disagree that a saddle is a bad gift idea. I would be super-ga ga if my woman bought me a Brooks or Selle Italia for a special occasion. If he doesn't like it, he can always trade it, or trade up. (So maybe think twice about cutting if you are not 100% sure).
Yes, the Brooks Pro comes in honey, last time I checked.
Weather problem is solved with a plastic bag, easily stored jammed between the rails towards the front of the saddle.
The cutting sounds like a great idea, nothing is more genuine than putting time into a project and giving it.
Also, ouch, you're cold.
That would be a sweet breakup gift though....

Apparently you are unfamiliar with oregon falls, winters and springs. It's not a question of storing a bag for the occasional downpour but rather riding on a plastic bag and hoping it's integrity is not breached half the time.
I think cutting is a horribly bad idea.... Happy holidays honey here is a cheap imitation of what you want that is going to self destruct if you actually use it around here cause I weakened it so much structurally and the roads are wet most of the time here but won't it look almost like you want it too for a few weeks or if you wait to put it on till july... oh and you can't return it and get something you can actually use either.
If he has said he wants a swift or swallow(not just that they are incredibly sexy but that he actually wants to ride one) that is a great choice. If he has said he wants a swallow and you can only afford a swift it's fine but make it clear you won't be hurt if he wants to trade up or to a non-brooks.

still do you really want to be riding one of those for most the year.
The more I think about it the more I think the OPs decision should really be based on her boyfriend's performance in bed.
Is it over to fast? go with the kashimax.
Lasts until everyone involved is bruised and sore? Clearly a situation where something modern with a cutout is called for.
The best you've ever had? You better go with something that emulates the current shape so you don't **** up a good thing.
I want a significant other who will drop 100-200 bucks on a saddle.

I've been ridin bags for quite a while an they typically don't breach that easily, especially if they're tied around your saddle when you're riding. You gotta go with the thick plastic bags, not them 7-11 jawns. And, there's always double wrappin'.
Also where have you seen cut brooks fail? I haven't really heard of any failing, there was some site about how to do it and had people posting great reviews. I think when laced they look really cool.
If he's already been eyeing the Brooks, he will be stoked if you buy that for him. Just make sure to get the right model and colour.
Weather is an issue, but it just means carrying a shopping bag to cover the saddle when you park.
Might I also suggest buying a tin of Brooks Proofide as a pre-saddle gift. You could say "I know you wanted the saddle, but this is all I could afford." ;)
