How well will the Mavic A317 disc 32 hole hold up with 28-35mm city tyres? I love the look of an all black rim. I'm having these built by universalcycles.com with a speedhub and the best spokes they have. Will the rim last?

I don't see why they wouldn't hold up! You have a good spoke count and all that! Keep us updated!

I have A719 32 spoke front and rear. About a 1,000 miles no problems. 25 Conti Gatorskins.

Personally, I don't like Mavic rims since one of them nearly killed me (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=201510). My experience is unusual, though, so the odds are in your favor. If you choose Mavic (in particular), be SURE to use a tire within the width that Mavic recommends. It may not keep a defective rim from failing, but it should keep Mavic from saying they have no responsibility whatsoever (as they did in my case).

not sure of the whole story but is it your fault for using to large of a tire which led to overloading the side of the rim?

The wide tire probably contributed to the failure. On the other hand, cyclocross riders have always used (and still typically use) tires as wide or wider than the ones I was using.

The consensus seems to be that my particular Mavic CXP-33 was defective. I also continue to hear a litany of complaints (mostly from bike shop owners) that Mavic rims have a much higher level of defects than they used to. In other words, Mavic quality isn't what it once was. This is anecdotal evidence, however, and every individual must make their own decision.

I no longer ride Mavic rims. Your life, your choice.
