Sounds good to me. I need the climbing miles, but not the speed this time of year. Dress warm, it could be quite cold up on the mountain!

Were you looking at starting at 7:00 AM or earlier?

Good question Rick...how long does it usually take? :o :o I need to be home (back in HB) preferably by noon, but could possibly arrange childcare for an hour or so if I needed to. I also wanted to get out there before traffic picked up on the freeway.

I have the week off ,so I'll join you if you don't mind. Your pace is slow? Well mine is slower!...unless we encounter a mtn lion, then you're on your own!:D

Hi Brandy,

When I'm in good shape, mid-summer, it's about a 2 hr. ride to Baldy Village, 1 hr. return trip. Now, and depending on how slow you are (or not?) maybe 2-1/2 to 2-3/4 hours to Baldy Village, 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 hr. return?

I takes me 45 min. to drive from Whittier to the start (Boulder Springs Road in Glendora), so maybe slightly longer from your place in HB.

Of course we can watch the time and turn around sooner if it looks like you're running short of time.

It was actually quite nice. Not very cold, but I did start at about 9. Sun was out!

Just GMR? It's about an hour for me. And then a pretty fast descent back down. I may be game. But can we push back the start to, say, 7:30 or so? (Later would be cool too. :) ) That way I can take my time riding out from my parents' place.

GMR up to the gate at the intersection with GRR. Takes me about two hours to get to Baldy Village.

"gmr" to me is going from boulder to the lodge... all those other initials are just that... extra initials! i've never done less than the lodge and it's always been called "riding gmr"... meaning going to the lodge! (until you started with the other initials... i had never heard to it referred to otherwise!)

Jason...I really need an early start for this one. Perhaps we could do staggered starts?!??! I'm not trying to be a pain in the butt, just trying to limit how much I am relying on my grandmother for babysitting, particularly with all of the LONG double century training rides I am going to have to use her for.

Civil twilight is at 630 and sunrise is just before 700. I'd like to be rolling as EARLY as possible.

7 is fine. I might run a bit late, but I'll do my best to catch up. Are we headed to the village? And if so, is the plan for an out and back or for a return via Claremont?

I know. But to me, Glendora Mountain Road is the name of a road that starts at Sierra Madre and ends at the intersection with Glendora Ridge Road. But you're welcome to believe I can ride to the village in an hour. :p

No... getting from the bottom of GMR to Baldy Village in an hour is pretty much out of the question. Maybe adxm can do it... but even for him it would be quite an accomplishment.

So, what is the acceptable time limit from the bottom of GMR to the village? Can a 2.5 hr'er join you guys? :D

The holiday bloat ride is too much for me, since I can only handle climbing at the start of a ride.

Rick@OCRR
12-20-06, 11:54 AM
I'll be returning to Glendora via the reverse of the route we take from Boulder Springs to the Village. I really enjoy riding back down all those switchbacks! Starting at 6:30 or 7:00 AM would be fine with me, just let me know which (Brandy).

I'm off all that week, and was planning to try to get a couple of climbing rides in (probably Palomar), and now I see this. But damn...I'd have to leave San Diego at O-dark-thirty to make the start!!

If you want to ride this some other day, you probably can find people who are willing to ride it at some other time of day. As long as it's not the day I'm going to Disneyland (no clue what day that is) I'm game.

OC probably knows exactly, but I think it takes us about 90 minutes to get to Baldy Village. So a cat 1 or pro could probably do it in about an hour.

You're right 90 minutes to the village and 2:15 to the lifts. It seems to breakdown nicely into 45 minute split times: GMR 45 minutes gate to gate, GRR 45 minutes gate to Village, 45 minutes switchbacks to lifts. I don't think we've ever gone all out from the bottom of GMR to the Village, I'm sure we could knock off a few minutes. An hour is probably about right for a pro.

Brandy and Co., be careful on Glendora Ridge Road, it's not very exposed to the morning sun, and gets icy in a couple of spots. Not trying to scare you, just keep your heads up :) I'd like to make out that way next week, I've yet to take my new bike on a real climb.

no snow on top of Palomar yet, so the roads should still be open but really cold. I'm a wimp when it comes to the cold, so I'd rather climb at noon when it's a bit warmer.

I think we're going fishing at Lake Wolford on that Tuesday morning, but doing the bloat ride up GMR next weekend.

I'm familiar w/ GMR leading up from Glendora (driven it with the S2000 people several times), but am unsure as to where the cyclists convene/ride/end up. Can someone post a quick map, as I would like to explore this path/ride myself before committing to doing another climbing-intensive ride and holding others back after my Oak Glen fiasco at the OCW Fall Metric.

Most people park on the stretch of GMR just above Sierre Madre. There's about a mile between Sierra Madre and the gate that closes GMR to traffic. There are several places to park along that stretch.

The other place to park is on a street named Boulder Springs. It's at the only traffic light on Glendora Mountain Road. It is a residential area, so please try to quiet when you're getting ready to ride in the early morning. The natives have been friendly in the past, and we'd like to keep it that way!

no snow on top of Palomar yet, so the roads should still be open but really cold. I rode up there on Tuesday and there's snow over 4500. They plowed it in the morning so the only bad parts were where the runoff had melted and refroze. It was this [holding thumb and index finger 1" apart] cold up there. I was so cold and shivering so badly that I called my wife and had her book a room and meet me at the Pala.

We drove up Wednesday and it must have snowed lightly Tuesday night. The guy that works at the general store drove up with snow on the top of his car and cables on the tires.

Get the PI fleecy ones. Take careful measurements for the gripper strip.
