You know, I think the worst sandbagging is the sandbagging we do to ourselves. And the worst of it is we BELIEVE it to be true!! I don't think I'm sandbagging when I say I'm the worst racer in Southern California. I don't think I'm sandbagging when I warn people how little long-distance endurance I have, or how little climbing ability I have, or how slow I am. But maybe I am sandbagging -- sandbagging myself -- because that's what I really do believe is the truth.

So, maybe you're right, caligurl, and the answer lies in no more sandbagging. And in celebrating the little victories. I need to remember how well I did on the RETURN trip from Seal Beach, and not on how poorly I did on the trip down the river TO Seal Beach. Because what you believe about yourself will probably turn out to be true -- it's called the self-fulfilling prophecy.

I was going to resolve to lose 10 pounds, improve my clycing, be more patient when driving, clean out my closets and give blood on a regular basis (at least 4 times a year), but yeah, okay, I resolve not to sandbag. Does this mean you'll stay with me on the climbs, Cali? Because, otherwise, I'm slower, and even if I can't say it, I'll be humming it...:D

jschen

This should be a relatively easy resolution to keep. I never sandbag. Well, except when there's too much rain and I need to keep out the water.

Brandy

I agree...sandbaggers suck!

BCIpam

Gosh I wish I were making sandbagging comments - sadly I speak only of reality - I am fat, out of shape and terribly slow plus right now 30 miles is my max but as of right now, I will speak of this no more. I vow to ride, lose weight and get in shape for 2007 - provided I don't get hurt or have some other disease suddenly come up or I need surgery for my back... :(

merider1

I agree...sandbaggers suck!
This from the former Sandbagging Queen??? Wow, I guess we really are turning a new page for 2007. If Brandy isn't sucking anymore, neither am I! :D

Not really...I'll probably always be a sandbagger...lol. ;) In part, I think it's hilarious to see people get their feathers ruffled over this...I mean really...does it matter??? The other part is that I am still so new to cycling...and I'm not the fastest climber...yet. ;) On my GMR thread for next Tuesday, I posted a warning that I would probably be slow...anyone who was there to watch me climb Oak Glen can attest to the fact that I am not speedy on the hills...yet. If I was just riding GMR for the first time with my core group that I ride with all the time (chimivee, voltman, tiff, etc.) I wouldn't feel the need for that disclaimer, as they know my abilities...however...opening the ride to the whole group, I thought it fair to warn that I don't have a lot of experience with sustained climbs, so if they came out looking for a fast group climb up GMR...they were probably not going to get it.

merider1

.I mean really...does it matter??? .
I've never thought so myself. I ride so much with men, I feel it is necessary to let them know what my abilities are (as honest as possible). Then, if I'm having a "good" ride and I go beyond those abilities, I shouldn't be labeled anything (such as "sandbagger"). When I comment about my abilities and how I'm trying to improve it's just me talking about a sport I'm in and love - and one where we all want to do well and no one wants to hold up a group.

So, IMHO, I think the New Year's resolution should be that people stop calling others sandbaggers!

Back on the "other" Forum caligurl used to give me a lot of trouble about sandbagging. I really miss that now . . . One time I remember, we were both climbing that 1 mile hill coming out of Baldy Village (on the way back to Glendora), and as I passed caligurl, she said something like "Oh yeah, you always say you're so slow, but you're going faster than me!"

And it really is a matter of who I'm riding with, whether I'm fast or slow (since its always a "relatively speaking" kind of thing). Plus, it's a time-of-year kind of thing re: what shape I'm in; and generally I'm in the worst shape this time of year, and better as we get closer to mid-summer.

However, due to my past history of being harrassed by caligurl (and rightfully so!), I will not engage in any overt, known and/or consensual sandbagging :) .

Hopefully . . . unless I forget in a weak moment . . .

Best Regs,
Rick / OCRR

I am slow therefore I am...

I am not slow...I am speed challenged

A cyclist was stopped by customs. "What's in the bags?", asked the officer, pointing to his panniers. "Sand," said the cyclist. "let me take a look", said the cop. The Cyclist did as he was told, emptied the bags, and proving they contained nothing but sand, refilled the bags, and continued across the border.
A week later, the same thing happened, and continued every week for a year, until one day the cyclist with the sand bags failed to appear.
A few months later, the cop saw the cyclist living it up downtown. "You sure had us foxed", said the cop. "We knew you were smuggling something across the border. I won't say a word - but what was it you were smuggling? ..... "Bicycles!"

Herb, herb, herb, after last Saturday, I think I have your trophy as the slowest rider in BF. I was running like a pony heading for the barn after we left santa fe dam behind, and you STILL rolled into the parking lot at encanto park ahead of me.

Of course, if truth serum is administered, I'll have to admit -- I LET you go ahead of me, because I would have gotten LOST on those trails north of the dam. And I'm not making it up or being overly modest, because as you know, Sergei DID get lost on said trails!! and I'm so navigationally challenged, I get lost in elevators. really. in fact, when we were rolling out of the park at the start of the ride, I was right behind Biting Duck, and complaining that we were going the WRONG direction -- why were we heading north instead of south? Being a MidWesterner, he swore that we were going south. Being a total space cadet, I swore we were heading north.

It took me a good 3 miles to figure out he (Biting Duck) was right. as usual.

That was me also...heading to the barn...I hadnt done that many miles recently and was pretty wasted...so I got that last push to get there...but there were a few spots i had a hard time keeping up with you!!

Luckily I am pretty good with directions...and yes we were definitely heading south!!

Poor Sergio...I felt bad for him when he showed up...he left his phone in the truck so he couldnt even call me...

I know I have gotten faster than I was...but I feel it is my duty to let my fellow riders know they may be waiting for me on occasion...its just a courtesy...

ok...cali..I will put my

I agree :)

It's interesting when we have those good rides we think "wow, I'm really getting better and improving" then we have one of those rides, that put us back into reality. Those rides were we get dropped. :( :( We those need reality check rides. It those rides that convince us to become a better cyclist we still need to lose weight, to ride more, to do more climbing repeats.

And I was pleasantly pleased to see you pretty much right behind me after the short but tough climb up the Santa Fe Dam...

thanks. Actually, your words of praise taste mighty sweet. Saturday was my most aggressive cycling challenge to date. I tried writing a post-ride report that evening, but the internet ate it somehow and it just evaporated into cyberspace. I was too tired to write it over again, and now it seems pretty silly.

I think I really must have worked my body very hard that day, because instead of recovering after a couple days, I've been deteriorating steadily all week. I'm not sure why. I've been eating pretty good, and getting in some light exercise and low-level riding at the track, but nothing really heavy. However, I've not been sleeping very well for the last three days -- my shoulder is really in bad shape after leaning on my bars for 6 straight hours, I think.

Sometimes our body needs rest. Sounds like you are over training. Go light for a week or two and you'll be surprised at how well you feel the next time you push. Also it's that time of year - alot stress to deal with. Give yourself a break.

VelodromePhoeni

BCIpam:

You're probably right. Biting Duck is FOREVER kicking my butt about not getting enough rest. I've also gone back to ballet class, and ballet is a TOUGH workout. Last night at the track I just started feeling so sick during the intervals that I had to quit.

Renee

BCIpam

Then you know it's time to take some rest. Trust me I know it's hard. Since my surgery I've been forced to go easy and it's killing me! Ballet is very tough on the body.

Slow down now - before something really bad happens. Mother Pam has spoken! ;)

Everything will start to feel better after a couple of days!

"Sandbagging" is so 2006.

For 2007, "Sandbrandying" is in.

Well, as those of you who have ridden with me know, I'm not a sandbagger. When I say I'm slow, I mean it. I'm much better than I was two years ago, and I'm getting faster. I still suck on uphills, though.

1955

I believe it's out natural tendency to down play our ability; if we were to show up after telling everyone how fast we are (and in my mind I feel fast) we would have a huge target on our backs. Not to many of us want to be thought of as a bragger and no one wants to get the snot beaten out of them by people you might have just met. Like someone here said, it's all relative. When I'm riding with my buddies, I'm one of the faster riders, but when I ride with BFer's like OC Roadie, Pico, Extort and Jschen to name just a few, I get my hat handed to me REAL QUICK! So I think that sandbagging is just a way of protecting out fragile psyche.

BCIpam

OK I say then let's take a poll on whose slow on flats and whose slow up hills and down hills, post it and then get over it. Would being slow prevent you from riding with the group? If the answer is NO then the whining is moot. I thought this group liked to ride for fun!? Why are the serious cycling talk about slow or fast huh??

And Volt - Sandbrandying - funny! :p

PS: BTW all you who do sandbag and complain all the time, do you realize how bad it makes the other riders feel when you go whizzing past? "He/she said were slow and they just blew by me like I was going backwards! I must be "choppped liver"!"

Riding in a group mean you put up with everyone's defects whether it's going slow on the flats, climbing or coming downhill. No one cares. Really! And if they do so what. Nothing can be done about it. So there!

Let's set up a fund - every time someone says "I want to do that ride but I'm so slow climbing and don't want to hold up the group..." they have to pay a dollar into a kitty. The money can be used at the end of the year for some party. Or you can pay me for my advice! :-D
