Nike Discovery Channel thermal tights. Daytimes temps here in the desert of mid 50's. May use these in the high 40's in January.

I've never seen them but from the description they sound like tights for sub freezing temps.
In the upper 40s-50s knickers, leg warmers or light weight tights work well. I have some Dryline tights that I find very comfortable for temps from 30F to 55F.

i wear my pearl izumi amfib pants for temps much higher than what they can go down to. for me they are comfy up to 45 until i start to swamp. but if i can, i just wear shorts.

The tights are too warm IMO for 50 deg
My wife has these and likes them from 50 down to 40 deg http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=23179
So what's up with the Sharon Tate pic and address? ( I read Helter Skelter too)

I saw the E! channel rerun on her and I just couldn't get over how beautiful she was with the unusual twist of having a Mona Lisa smile. That set her apart from the other dime a dozen blondes I've always been attracted to.
What a waste. Hard to believe that she would be 63 years old if she had lived.:(

I must be a stiff too, but tights in the 50's? I guess my answer is that they would probably be too warm for 50's and probably ok in the low 40's. As I type this it is 34 F out and i have a pair of similar tights on as i am getting ready to go for a ride.

40 and 50 degrees is shorts weather here. The high today is in the low 50's and people act like its a summer day. Good biking weather--I believe I'll leave work early!
