My LBS told me yesterday that it is typical for cyclocross riders to go down one or even two sizes when choosing a frame for cyclocross. I ride a 58 road bike, so he suggested a 54 in CX, since the standover height is roughly the same and the top tube length plays less of a role in CX racing since you are sitting more upright than a typical road bike position.
Any thoughts on this? It makes sense to me, but I will be a total fred when I start CX training and racing.
Thanks for your thoughts!

Yes some do go down a frame size from their road bikes to their cx bike. I have a 58 cm road and a 56 cm for my cx. Have you tried a 54 cm bike? I would say go with what is the most comfortable for you.
