I just had an old steel frame converted to 3 speed (Nexus w/coaster brake) by a local bike shop because 1) I only seemed to be using the front triple on my other bike 2) I wanted to practice not riding a freewheel in hopes of someday getting a single-speed and 3) I don't think there are enough 3 speeds in the world. :)
I've noticed a strange (to me) behavior from the hub. While coasting, it sounds like 2 bicycles worth of clicking. More importantly, in the top 2 gears, while I'm pedalling, it still makes the clicking of a single bicycle. In the lowest gear, while pedalling, it is silent.
It sounds to me like there are 2 freewheels inside the hub, and that one goes away in the lowest gear. I'm not sure why this is, and would appreciate if anyone could explain.
I'm glad that the hill climbing gear is silent and not wasting energy on creating noise, but it would be nice if the middle cruising gear was silent too, both for efficiency's sake and the peace and quiet.
So anyways, is this normal ? Or is it slightly out of adjustment ? Otherwise it runs great and I'm really happy with this shop's conversion.
