Just kidding... but anyway I find the Social Security numbering system fascinating. Did you know that the first three numbers have to do with where you were born. Starting in the northeast they have the lowest numbers and they get higher as you move out west.

The first three are the Area Number is assigned by the geographical region.

The middle two digits are the group number. They have no special geographic or data significance but merely serve to break the number into conveniently sized blocks for orderly issuance. There is a theory that the two middle digits can be used to identify a person's ethnic background but this is not true as studies have found.
The group numbers range from 01 to 99. However, they are not assigned in consecutive order. For administrative reasons, group numbers are issued in the following order:

ODD numbers from 01 through 09
EVEN numbers from 10 through 98
EVEN numbers from 02 through 08
ODD numbers from 11 through 99

The last four digits are serial numbers. They represent a straight numerical sequence of digits from 0001-9999 within the group.

Currently, a valid SSN cannot have an area number above 772.

There are also special numbers which will never be allocated:

Numbers with all zeros in any digit group (000-xx-xxxx, xxx-00-xxxx, xxx-xx-0000).

Numbers of the form 666-xx-xxxx, Though the omission of this area number is not acknowledged by the SSA, it remains unassigned.

Numbers from 987-65-4320 to 987-65-4329 are reserved for use in advertisements

Here is a link with how the numbers break down for the states
http://www.ssa.gov/employer/stateweb.htm

This info is from wikipedia and i find it very interesting.

Anyway I am from NY and my first three are 060.

That's wierd......many illegal aliens use all zeros, don't even bother with counterfeit SS cards, find employment, pay withholding taxes on SS accounts that don't exist, and don't seem to have problems with the IRS....

Before SS#'s were issued at birth, the first three digits indicated where your SS account was first established. Some of us are still living.

Close, but not entirely accuracte. The first three numbers are based on where you are when you receive a card. My wife not born in Hawaii, but has a Hawaii number. Our daughter was born in Hawaii, but has a California number. Our son was born in California, but has a Pennsylvania number. (we moved when they were young).

Here's some more SSN trivia for you, Turb:
The last 2 numbers of your SSN will dictate on what day you report to the unemployment office.
The 582's through 585's (or so) indicate a foreign or territorial birth (PR, Am Samoa, Army Brats) of an American citizen, while Naturalized citizens receive SSN's based upon the area they apply in.

I've got a real nice barracks bag from my time in the service. Has my name and service number stencilled on it. In ancient times, your service number was the same as your social security number. Good thing identity theft wasn't a problem then. What are they using for service numbers now? Still the SSN?
