Southern California - Pasadena to Encanto Park Route

Does anyone have any good routes from Pasadena near Old Town to Encanto Park?

I'm trying to avoid taking Foothill all the way just because of all the lights/traffic, if possible.

Yes.....take Maple all the way across to Sierra Madre and take Sierra Madre to Duarte. Maple pretty much runs alongside the 210 freeway. We sometimes take Maple back towards South Pas from Sierra Madre after the Saturday Montrose ride.

I believe Maple runs west just north of the freeway, and is one-way so you would take that on your way BACK to Pasadena. To head eastbound, you would want to take Corson, which is the one-way street just south of the 210.

I didn't even realize it was a one way street....and I've taken that street dozens of times...:D

Since I'd be starting West of Lake I'll probably avoid Curson/Maple, the intersection of Curson/Lake scares me.

Yeah, the intersection of Corson/Lake/Maple gets pretty hairy. I recommend California - a little less traffic than Del Mar and there's a pseudo bike lane/parking that gives you more space on the road. If you head straight on California, it turns into Sunset/Temple City Blvd., where you can make a left on Duarte and continue on. If you don't mind going a little more south, I would recommend Camino Real or Longden as they're quieter traffic-wise, then left on Myrtle, right on Duarte, left on Highland, right on Huntington, left on Encanto Pkwy.

Camino Real looks pretty good, do you have a preference between it and Longden? The additional distance isn't a problem.

If additional distance isn't a problem then throw in a little climbing and head north on Sierra Madre and cut across into Duarte......this is a much nicer, quieter route....:)

I ride Sierra Madre frequently but don't usually go past Santa Anita.

Would you take Foothill east from the Santa Anita/Highland Oaks area, or would you go farther south and take another street east to duarte?

Actually, you can ride a little further through residential streets on Sierra Madre and eventually spill out onto Footthill. From there, stay on Foothill all the way to Encanto parkway. That's part of the Montrose Sat ride route which rides past Encanto park northward, then cuts westward, thru Bradbury, then hits Foothill.

That actually works out to be about half a mile less than the Camino Real route.

I think I'll go out via Sierra Madre and back Camino Real.
