Mountain Biking - Flagstaff/Sedona cross country trail suggestions?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The wife and I are going to Flag/sedona early next month to do some riding. I've been over to mtbreview.com and checked out some of the trail reviews there, but I'd like some opinions from you folks. Like I say in the subject, I'm looking for good XC trails. Nothing insane, as it's the first MTB trip of the year and I've not tested the reflexes for a while.

Talk amongst yourselves...

Give this site a try

AZ local site (http://www.mybikesite.com/arizona/)

Sometimes they can be helpful and other times real idiots (alot of flame wars) but there are some level headed riders there.

If you're looking for a great cross country trail, Flagstaff is the place. Sedona trails are mostly very technical single track that'll have you walking.

From I-17 heading north through Flagstaff, get off when you see a "Little America" sign on your right, its a large sign. The road you get on is Butler, turn left on it. At the intersection by McDonald's turn left (it stays Butler). Go strait through the Taco Bell intersection. Your next intersection is Lonetree, turn left on it (there is a bail bond place on the corner) follow Lonetree just past the Police Station / Jail until you go over a wash. On the left side of the wash is the start of a great network of well outlined trails. Nothing terribly technical, but very scenic (seen here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25604)). If you need a place to park you can turn right on S. O'Leary (just after the jail / police station), then left into the Alpine Ridge parking lot.

If your heart is set on a Sedona ride you could try Devil's Kitchen which is up Soldier's Pass road (the single track is tough, but there is a jeep trail that runs along side it). If you're interested just tell me and I'll dig up instructions to it.

Good luck!

Other problem with Sedona rides is you gotta pay for a Red Rock Pass to park your car at any of the trail heads... what a drag

How far are the trailheads in Sedona from the town? If it's in riding distance, I could avoid those pesky fees.

Flagstaff is a cool town. Besides almost being abducted, I enjoyed my stay there :D

Yep, Flag's a fun town to hang out in. Only 3 hours away, too.

It all depends where you go. One thing you can do is go to Bike and Bean in the village, ditch your car there, then head for the Cathedral Rock trail. Its not terribly far from the shop. Alternatively you could ditch the car at Mountain Bike Heaven in west Sedona and drive up either Mountain Shadows or Coffee Pot and get to TeaCup; that eventually runs into Devil's Kitchen. Devil's Kitchen would be an easier ride, but you're competing with the millions of jeep-riding tourists for the trail. You'll have no such annoyance at Cathedral Rock.

Well.. I was on vacation with my family at the time. I guess I was about 14 or so. We were touring Arizona and the neighboring states, just playing around and having a good time. I rented a bike in Flagstaff because I'd heard the trails were the bizzomb. Anyway... I was riding in a park in Flagstaff, and then pulled out onto the road. One of the thing's I'd noticed about the Western US was all the signs for the missing children. I thought it was kinda odd how many of them there were. I guess it's a popular place to abduct children since it's such a vast area. Well.. so I start peddling down this road in a quiet section of the town. I noticed a truck driving slowly behind me, but I didn't think anything of it. I peddaled for a little while, and then I realized that the truck was still behind me. I looked over my shoulder and it was an old truck with two SHADY lookin' guys in it, and they were obviously following me. So I sprinted off the road into a park and they took off. Really strange.

I'm glad everything worked out so we can laugh about that now. :D

Not everyone in flagstaff is a child abductor! Not more than around.... %30 of the population I would say
