Bicycle Mechanics - cleat and shoe stuck on pedal

The pedal is the shimano one with the platform on one side and spd on the other. When I went to twist out the cleat on my left foot broke loose and now the shoe just spins on the pedal. I loosened the tension on the screw that I can reach with a wrench but still cannot make the cleat pop off even with a screwdriver. The shoes are old and I guess the part of the sole with the cleat attachment came loose from the rest of the shoe. I know the shoes are toast but I would like to save the pedal. I didn't have time at the moment but I'm going to have to cut the shoes off I guess, maybe I can better reach the cleat.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to get these things apart?

WD40 or something like that to give some lubrication where it is stuck? Of course if the sole is separated from the shoe your idea is the way to go. Time for new shoes and new cleats. Once you get it apart make sure the pedal spring is not broken or you will have the same thing with new shoes and cleats. Good luck.

Can you access the hex bolts in the cleat? Can you remove the cleat from your other shoe and screw the stuck cleat to that shoe while it's in the pedal?

I can't access the hex bolts in the shoe, maybe if it were a regular pedal instead of the one with the platform on one side.

I think it was the shoe that gave out, I don't think it was the pedal spring but who knows. It is kind of funny cause when I was riding I wiggled my feet and thought to myself "gee, I didn't realize I had so much float". And I guess I didn't. I have a spare pair of wellgo spd pedals I think I will put on when I get some new shoes, at least until I manage to liberate the other pedal.

I had the same thing happen to me. A screw came out of the cleat. I was lucky I didn't fall over. I ended up taking my foot out of the shoe and getting in there with a very long, thin screw driver position against the cleat. I hit the screwdriver with a hammer and it popped out. I did this through the frame of the bike so the cleat rotated the same way it would when I was twisting out with my foot. Took me about 10 minutes to get it right.

I was about to say it may be just that. Try to take a good look at it to make sure what's up. Even if you can't see a thing, you may just try to unscrew the remaining screw by spinning the shoe around. Don't attack the shoe with a dremel until you're sure it's the culprit.
