Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - The smell of burning rubber, timber and flesh

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Brilliant spill in the scratch race as a rider dipped down onto the duckboard coming out of the bank, skidded sideways, bringing the rider alongside of him on top of him.
I was the wheel behind watching the wheels and limbs fly in slow motion (which is actually 50kph)
Next lap I caught a wonderful blend of timber, rubber and skin in the air.
No reason to stop the race, chased hard, pulled in a 'turd' place.
I *love* the track

what does that mean?
when a tubular tire is improperly glued, it can roll off the rim in a turn. this can lead to the carnage mrwhite described in the OP.
AW: got any pics? my schadenfruede (sp?) is curious...

If a tubular tire/tyre rolls off the rim during a race, there is an automatic 3 month suspension enforced to the offending rider.
this is probably documented online somewhere
The old heads told me about this when I had some suspect singles on a set of wheels. 'Make sure they dont come off or you'll get a 3 month holiday' was the call.
At the recent Melbourne Cup on Wheels, a riders front wheel came out (insufficiently tightened!!!) and caused a major crash.
He was fined $500 + 3 months.
Jitensha: Sorry no pics. I was riding ;)
165: Still waiting ;)
