Can i use a acera 8 speed chainset on a 9 speed system?
The chain won't fit on the 9-speed rear cassette.
sorry, i dont mean to jack your thread, but i've was fixing to start a thread about acera stuff, so here goes the threadjack...
speaking of acera-x, any opinions about these components? i'm a newbie, so i dont need anything super great, and this will go for two bikes (my wife's and mine) so i need somthing somewhat cheap. so the acera prices are good for me, just curious if they will give decent performance.
thanks!

If its Acera, it's 7 speed right?
I think the centre to centre on chainset's (cranks) are different than on 8/9 speed. Others may correct me but I think it may work, but not as efficiently as a 9 speed crank...
Hope that helps
its 7 or 8 speed i do believe.

The chain is too thick for the narrow spacing on a 9 speed cassette. You require a new 9 speed compatible chain.

Am I wrong or do the English not call a Crank and Chainrings up front the Chainset?
*searching through the pile for a copy of MBRider....*

The crank and chainrings in North America are commonly referred to as a Crankset but there may be other names for it.
Acera is a fine component group for recreational riding (read: comfort/hybrid bikes). It doesn't do so well on mountain bikes that take a lot of abuse, but on those that aren't ridden beyond their intended purpose, it's fine. It swings both ways, as far as 7 or 8 speed.
are you getting the whole acera group?
well here's what i think.
Brakes -- good
brake/shifters(levers) -- good
derailers(rear) -- i dont recommend.. get the Altus instead
derailers(front) -- will do
crankset -- ok
hubs -- will do, if you dont go deep in the mud.
you can mix shimano components. ask your lbs for compatability.
thanks alot dexmax!
