Bicycle Mechanics - Changing a Bontrager hubshell?

I've noticed that I have developed a bunch of divets on my hub shell where some of the cassette cogs have made indents. The wheel is a Bontrager Race lite. Bontrager advertises that the wheel can be easily converted between Campy and Shimano so I assume this means that the hub shell is easily replaced. Although I don't need to do this now, I can see that down the road somewhere that this is going to affect my shifting I'm going to have to change the hub shell.

Any suggestions re what is involved in replacing the Hub shell (with another Shimano compatible shell) and where I can order one of these. Are any special tools needed to do the replacement.

Bontrager is a Trek house-brand so try contacting Trek to see if replacement parts are available. I assume you want to replace the freehub body, not the hub itself.

BTW, unless the divots are so deep the cogs are hard to remove or they are in danger of cutting completely through the splines, it's more of an appearance problem than a structural worry.

I do not know what is your background on bicycle mechanics, but I would suggest to replace (if needed of course) the freehub body in a trek agent.

Some of the Bontrager hubs have a freehub body that just pulls off with a firm tug. The new one just slides on. Depends on the model of your hubs though.

I bought a new freehub body for Bontrager Race Lite Disc wheel at the Trek LBS. Cost was ~$32. It seems that Trek/Bontrager prohibit shops/stores from selling on line. During my search, I could easily find Shimano freehub bodies, but nothing for Trek/Bont.

For my freehub, I needed an 11mm hex socket (Allen head) to remove it. I was able to find plenty of 10mm and 12mm, but no 11mm. However, a 7/16 inch (11.112mm) hex socket worked fine. After I removed the old one, I bought the new one, and it came with a 11mm hex socket adapter. The LBS guy mumbled something about my particular freehub body was made by DT/Swiss.

It's easy to change: remove the axle, then remove the freehub shell - it's that simple.
