Mountain Biking - Outer Chainring Problem

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just noticed today that one of the teeth on my outer chainring is broken and another bent. It may also be bent generally because when I rotate the chain backwards it pops out of the chainring (I think that's called chain suck?) in the same place. I straightened the bent tooth but am not sure if I need a new chainring or if I can some how fix this. Anyone have any advice? Also, can you just buy any outer chainring, i.e., are there compatibility issues, etc.? Finally, what outer chainring do you guys recommend? I have a 06 Stumpjumper (hard tail) and mostly use it for intermediate xc trails. Price is not too much of an issue, although I would obviously prefer to spend less than more. Thanks!
All I know is that if you replace the chainring, you need to know the bolt center diameter (BCD). Wait I think the 2nd and 3rd are the same measurement and the small ring is by itself?
Hi KayGee,
Try to examine first your chain for some bend or twisted or perhaps you may replace the chain also. Chain be replaced in every two years of service. Sometimes it cause the chainring teeth to broke and bend. Just go to your Lbs, have your outer ring replace and also the chain if needed.
Anyone have any recommendations on chainrings?
