I grabbed the camera just in time to catch him in the act (so excuse the poor focus). He must know the smell of dog toy rubber or the general smell of something coming from the pet store.

What do ya know, my wife was browsing through some breed books and discovered that he's not a pitbull (at least not mostly). Turns out he's the spitting image of a Rhodesian Ridgeback except he doesn't have hair where the "ridge" should be because of his back being set on fire (we got him at a rescue shelter). We always knew he was a mutt and assumed he had pit and lab in him, but the pics in the books have his snout, ears, stature, chest marking, and even personality traits!
Oh yeah, apparently that breed was formerly used to hunt lions!!!

Thank you for not clipping the ears or docking the tail. Pits are great dogs if treated well and from good breeding. I've known good kind and bad kind.

My wife got him from a rescue shelter when he was about 4 months old, but we are glad they didn't bob the tail. As far as I remember, the only reason they started doing this to pits was for fighting, and also to herding dogs so the cattle wouldn't step on their tales. My parents have Kelpies that were originally raised for herding, and I have top say it is kind cute to see them wag their little nubs, but sad to know someone lopped them off when they were young. Great cattle dogs, though, always nipping at my heels if I try to ride my bike away from the house :)
