Touring - The best thing about touring is...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Milkshakes!

I rode to my folks place today. Stopped for lunch in a small town halfway and had a milkshake and it reminded me of all the great touring milkshakes I've had. The ones where the REAL strawberries keep clogging up the straw. And they give you the stainless steel thing with all the shake that wouldn't fit into the glass. Mmm-Mm!!!

Today wasn't quite one of those... but just the memory of all those milkshakes made me want to go out on a tour.

Yesiree Bubba,

I'll have to vote with you on that. The milkshake is on my list for one of the best things about Life, let alone touring. I love stopping at various LICS (local ice cream stands) to test their fare. The true test of a good LICS is: How good are their shakes? You can keep the cones, sundaes and banana splits, . Just give me a few scoops of ice cream with a cup or so of milk mixed up in a large cup (with maybe some other goodies i.e. strawberries or chocolate syrup) and I am one happy moose!

Bubba, I love that description of on-the-road milkshakes. I hadn't thought of the steel container with leftovers in years--but yes, I've experienced that, too! :)

And the straw-clogging strawberry or pineapple: what's the CORRECT thing to do? I have sometimes warned people around me and then blown through the straw... Here I am revealing one of the deepest darkest secrets of my existence right here on the Internet...oh...

You know folks, I am desparate to go on another tour at some point. In the future, as to the best thing about touring, I can't decide. I just like the idea of ending the day somewhere other than where I started it.

I'll let you in on my strawberry technique...

I take the straw out and suck on the bottom end. Works beautifully and minimizes waste but I'm not sure what Emily Post would think.

Pineapple... Hmmm. I'll have to give that one a try next time I'm at the LICS (love that acronym  ).

I say "TO HELL WITH STRAWS"!!

Pick up that big old shake, point it at your face, and lift the bottom skyward. If the shake suspends in the glass for a time and then the whole thing plops in your face in one huge thick mass, then you know you really have a good shake.

I can accept, even appreciate, the "TO HELL WITH STRAWS" ideology, but according to your viscosity hypothesis McDonald's makes a good shake. That just doesn't compute.:D

I love a Root Beer Float, or an old-fashioned Chocolate Soda. These treats quench your thirst for a carbonated beverage while also providing an ice-cream fix. I usually go for the Root Beer Float because few really know how to make a good Chocolate Soda anymore.

Yum, this thread tasting really good right now...
Anyway, there is this place over on the east side (around 60th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue) called Seredipity's that has this amazing Frozen Hot Chocolate drink!!! Yes, Frozen-Hot..... It is actually served very cold and is in a HUGE bowl-like glass with whipped cream and shaved chocolate. This place was in a few movies.... although I can't think of the names. I think Michelle Pfeiffer was in one of them.
If anyone comes into NYC, you have to stop by Serendipity's for their Frozen Hot Chocolate!!!

Mmmm! Root beer! (said with Homer Simpson's voice.)

I just may have to have one of those next time I stop for lunch on a ride. I haven't had one in ages.

Thanks for the reminder.

Frozen Hot Chocolate sounds like it needs to be tried too.

I like visiting local fruit stalls in the area where I'm touring and getting stuff really cheap. The grapes in Stanthorpe are the 8th wonder of the world.

Yup! Fruit stands rank pretty high. Watermelon, wild blueberries and raspberries...

Though I once had a bad fruit experience in your part of the world Chris. I was stopped for lunch in a local park and some very friendly locals started chatting me up. They gave me some local fruit that they were amazed I'd never tried, I don't remember what it was, though I would know it if I ever saw it again. It was delicious!!! But as a friend of mine says about curried chicken, "It wasn't the hello, but the goodbye". Minutes later, I just barely made it to the loo, and the next few hours were less than pleasant. Still, you've gotta love those fruit stands.

The best LICS are the ones where you take your cone, or shake, or frappe as they call them around here, away from the stand and go stand at the fence and watch the cows that made the milk graze! Yea, Crescent Ridge Dairy!

Oh gosh - I've obviously been missing out. I haven't had a milk shake for years and years and years... I guess I'll have to stop in at the next LICS I pass!

Oh yeah - the best part of touring?? The people we meet!
