I'm been thinking about getting campy record pista cranks, alot. This would be largely for street use. I'm wondering if there are any drawbacks to this or do I see everyone on 75's because they are the so great for the $. Also are there BB alternatives (less $). Thanks.

no drawbacks, tho yes, campagnolo cranks are more expensive. you could use a miche bottom bracket if you wanted to save money, but why not go all out?

I saw trackstar nyc offering the campy veloce 111mm as an alternative to the record BB for people concerned with street use and $(more frequent replacings i'd guess). All out always sounds good, but i'm trying to learn alittle bit of restraint.

i ended up mating my campy cranks to a phil wood. i have a couple older looseball ones, too, as i dont mind overhauling periodically.

I haven't replaced BB and crankset before. Is it easy? Do i need an special wrenches? Also im running 48/17 if i go up to 49 do i need to do anything with the chain or just move the rear wheel a little bit or something?

yes you will need some special tools. you will need a crank puller to take off the cranks. read this to learn how to take out a cartridge bb: http://www.parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=94 its not very hard.
you may not have to do anything regarding changing your gearing, there is a chance you may need to add an extra link to your chain.

doesn't look too complicated, but i'll likely have my LBS do it, as it's just around the corner, and space is sort of at a premium in the apt. these days(just an excuse). Anyway, the sun is shining in brooklyn so i think i'm gonna go play in traffic. thanks onetwentyeight!

yea i have a campy record bb and i seriously can't afford the campy crankset. it's like 300 dollars, buying sugino cranks, chain ring and even a cheap bb is still close to 300. so i've just decided to cry until something comes up. i'm also thinking about getting paul cranks, they are 230 shipped, and they fit on the 111mm campy bb.

I use cheap Campy BB's with my C Record and vintage pista cranks. The cranks are fine for the street. Square tapered Campy BB's are really cheap now. I just picked up another brand new 68/111 Veloce BB on Ebay for $11.
