Classic & Vintage - Vintage Austrian Clubman? What kind of bike is this? (title edited)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This is my dads bike from his UC Davis days. It says Clubman on the downtube and the head crest says made in Austria.

It has Huret components.

Steyr Austro-Daimler-Puch

Company imported into the US under both the Austro-Daimler and Puch names.

A-Ds were usually the higher line bikes.

Company is still around, I believe but they discontinued the A-D name some time ago. As I recall the Clubman was an entry level in the Puch line.

I'm sure more posts with info will follow.

edit: Company also built higher quality Free Spirits for Sears in the 1960s-earlier 70s.

Looks like it has "Styer" on the headbadge too, and Weinmann Centerpulls? Neat old bike!

Australia is the country where they hang corks off their hats and wrestle crocodiles. Austria is the country where they wear lederhosen, invented Hitler and yodel. Don't they teach geography in the US?

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe it's a "W" spelling thing!;)

Haha, quite funny. You know, after I made that typo in the title box I tried to edit it because I knew someone on the forum would have to point out how I made such a stupid mistake. Low and behold, an individual, clearly much more intelligent than I, decided to prove their superiority to the whole forum for my egregious misprint.

Would you like to enlighten me on any other academic topics? You have such an abundance of knowledge from which I could obviously benefit.

Well played and happy holidays.

LOL, so you're saying you have an IQ less than my IQ of 85?

You Canadians crack me up.;)

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing recently. So I immediately posted again, only with the editing done. Then I went back and admitted my mistake in the first post and also added "mods, could you please delete this post?" and voila! A mod deleted the erronious post.:D
Thanks Mods, BTW!:)

I don't fell bad, it is just annoying because everyone else who read the post noticed the mistake, including me, but he just had to make sure that it was accented. Yet why should I blame him, I mean is there really anything better than pointing out the faults of others to obtain a false sense of superiority? Maybe sex.

I have just listed this bike on craigslist for anyone who would want it. I will take anything for it--including a geography textbook.

I edited the title so maybe we can have some decorum here?

It looks like a fun bike to try and restore. I have an old 1963ish AD Bergmeister, which has a terrible paint job, and in my opinion was not worth restoring. So I converted it to a fixed gear and have tons of fun with it.

In the early 1970s we sold a few Clubmans (Clubmen?) at Bikecology. This bottom-of-the-line model from S-D-P of Graz, Austria (hometown of California's "Governator," as well) was Austria's answer to the Peugeot AO-8. The model depicted has Huret shift levers and exposed gear cables, instead of the wretched full-length housings on the Simplex-geared bikes we peddled. (Even worse were the 1974 models, with full-length gear cable housings and stem-mounted Simplex shifters. Peugeot made the same error that year, putting stem shifters on the UO-8.)

I am, of course, terribly biased by my own stable (see signature), but I really like Austrian bikes. I also really liked the one Australian bike I have seen, a Kypo (not to be confused with Capo of Vienna).

Interesting geography lesson for me: S-D-P is located in Graz, toward the south end of the country, but I notice there is also a town of "Steyr" toward the north.

I like Austrian bikes, and Euro machines in general, and Huret Derailleurs.

That's for sure! That is why I posted a remedy that worked for me.:D

Not surprising. Before the 1970s bike boom many (most) of the European road bikes (including all of the Capos) exported to the U.S. ended up being sold in California.
