Foo - New Year's Eve: Thumbs up or thumbs down?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So, how do you feel about New Year's Eve celebrations: fun festivities, or bogus holiday? Why do you feel this way?

Thumbs down. I spent the past 17 years celebrating this night with my husband, the first 16 of which were rather, uh, private, and special and intimate events, celebrating our love of the previous year, and looking forward to the following year, and last year spent just holding hands and watching TV.
This year, I am alone. And I don't know how I'll make it. I don't feel like having company, yet, don't feel like going out. Maybe I'll have some Foo-chatter that night...?

Anything to keep you busy and occupied, Vega.
Mine is a thumbs up this year. Planning on some good friends, music with many guitars, a dumbek, some belly shaking, and some good times! :D

Sounds pretty much like our New Years minus the guitars. Oh and I doubt my belly will be doing any shaking ... except perhaps to force down the food and drinks. I'll leave the belly shaking to my lovely wife.

Belly shaking is always lovely on the womens. But don't be afraid to get in there and move your hips a bit! :)

I'll stick to the dumbek. No one wants to see me shake my hips.

Are you really a dumbek player? That's so awesome. :)

I have a classic Yamaha, and a '77 12-string Höfner (model 492), and will be wailing and playing. Might even move my hips a little, as though there's anyone to appreciate it. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

My wife and I enjoy spending New Year's Eve together, usually just us.

That is so kick ass, girl. I used to have a Yamaha 12 string myself...I miss that beauty. Now I'm down to 2 acoustic guitars and my own set of pipes. :)
Yes, move your hips. It doesn't matter who's there to appreciate it. Appreciate it yourself. :)

I'm a dumbek player in the making. Taken a few drumming classes and had my arm twisted a couple of times to drum on stage. Definitely still a beginner. But I do enjoy it. Great way to relieve stress.

Oh yes. I want to take a class really bad and see if I can't get a certain someone to join in with me. I've always loved the thought of having a SO drum to me while I dance. Love, love, love the live drummers. :)
What rhythms do you know so far? :)

That's unfortunate. Not that this is much fun, however I have spent the occasional New Years Eve watching the count-downs on TV. OK, more often than I care to admit.

You go, oboeguy! We all have to deal with our own curveballs. BTW, my stepson plays viola and violin as a professional musician in OK.... He teaches, too.

Spelling will be atrocious but here goes: Malfuf, beledi, saidi, ciftitelli, etc. Like I said the spelling is a bit nasty. Not that there is only one way to spell arab words. They seem to have multiple spelling depending on the region.
I would highly recommend dancers learn to drum. It will give you a different perspective to the rythms ... not that you dancing needs it. From what I've seen from your video you and your troupe did a great job. Looks like you're more into the tribal dancing than the traditional bellydance. Tribal is definitely gaining popularity in this region.
You've probably run into this website before, however if not it's a great place to learn rythms:

Indeed, we've had quite a few curveballs in the 4+ years we've been married. You seem pretty good at keeping your proverbial chin up, so YOU go. :)
Viola, eh? Gosh, don't get me started on viola jokes (http://www.mit.edu/~jcb/jokes/viola.html)... :D

I'm :roflmao:. And I'm forwarding this link to my stepson. I'm sure he's seen 'em all, but it's still all so meaningful at this point, to reach out with humor. :D
Thanks, oboe:rolleyes:guy. <cough,cough> :D
Thumbs down-ish. We can't find a sitter so it looks like we're staying in this year. We'll make the best of it and maybe have a few people over. I'm kinda sick of the usual suspects though, maybe I'll invite some work people over or something.
New Year's Eve is for amateurs......us real alcoholics don't need a special occasion to get drunk.

Eh......... to me it's just a legal drinking holiday. Everyone is getting drunk and getting silly. The new year is supposed to be a fresh start and new beginnings. Who wants to start it with a hangover?
Hey Vega! Tell you what! If I dont' have to work the next day at 5am, give me a call and you and I can spend New Years together! :)

hey don't forget, Run BMV is making an appearance hahaha
Well this year I'm suppose to be going to Vegas, right now I'm on eternal hold with Frontier Airlines (huge snowstorm coming to Colorado). The wait on the phone is up to an hour. Bf and I are to leave on Saturday and I just learned this morning that we could get a flight today possibly!!
Normally I like to do something on New Years this year is special cause its for my girlfriend's 30th birthday!!!
I love New Year's. I threw a Blues party last year that lasted almost 36 hours - planning another this year though will probably be a little more subdued since NYC is exploding with options this year.
Some people drank, some people drank a lot, some people didn't drink at all - but everyone had a good time which is what mattered most!

Thanks, that link is great! I love dancing to all those rhythms you posted, except I'm not sure I'm familiar with Malfuf. Perhaps I know it by sound or another name. I have drummed a little bit, but it has really just been me messing around. I really want to take a class.
Before I joined this troupe, I danced more traditional types of bellydance. I've done classical Egyptian, turkish, and even tribal fusion. In my fusion class we often danced to live drummer by my instructor's husband. Those were some of my most enjoyable times dancing. There is just something so earthy and sensual about it. It's like you are not only creating art on your own, you are creating it with another person. :)

+1. I've never been into partys. Don't drink. Hate the crap that gets put on tv as "entertainment". For me it's just a reminder that I need to start putting different dates on my checks.

Sounds like Snowy's boyfriend wouldn't exactly be hating life either... but I doubt that she means "girlfriend" in that sense.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of New Year's celebrations. I've even gone camping on the Appalachian Trail on New Year's Eve, just to get away from it all. Perhaps I'm Scrooging, but I kind of subscribe to U2's philosophy: "Nothing changes on New Year's Day"... except the calendar, of course.

Having a dirty mind is a great thing, as I never get bored. Plus it makes for great opportunities to turn almost any moment in to a "Butthead" moment (as in "Beavis and..."). Especially when reading articles about the head of the World Anti-Doping Agency, uuhhhhh huh huh huh...

For most women, "girlfriend" is simply (and disappointly so for you guys) a close female friend when we refer to our "girlfriends." Unless Danno has evidence to the contrary! :roflmao:
I have a dirty mind, too. But let's not go there, or I might have to start ticking off my "Outlook for 2007" items.
Yeah Vega girlfriend for me is simply just meaning friend. God gave me this strong desire for MEN!! :) I'm staying with that.

Thumbs down. I'll be in bed by 11. When I did celebrate it was always a big disapointment: High cover charges, expensive drinks, way overcrowded clubs, long lines to the bathroom, etc.
It is amazing to me how many idiots are firing guns into the air at/around midnight. If you are in a city, make sure you're indoors at midnight!

I'll probably end up with some friends either drunk at the playground up the road, at a bushparty or having a fire at a friends.
