Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - No nasty comments please... just point me to the thread.

Could someone point me to a thread that explains why single and/or fixed are prefered to multigeared and/or freewheel. Pal trying to convert me. My commute has 1800' climbing each workday.

If your pal can't convince you I doubt any thread on here can. Good luck.

Fixed might be nice for working on your spin (and SS just for the fun of it), but with that amount of climbing each day, use your gears. Be kind to your knees - they will thank you for it one day.

Anyone who thinks that ss/fixed is 100% better all the time is wrong.

FG might not be well suited to your commute, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. If you have the means, give it a try but keep your geary for the commute.

There is no right answer. The Freewheel / Fixed debate is no different than:

Honda / VW
DEM / GOP
Benz / Beamer
ICP / Eminem
PC / MAC

There seems to be a lot more subjectivity than objectivity in these types of debates. It's basically up to you. And reading words probably won't make up your mind. Your butt will tell you after 50 yards of riding. That's all it takes (for me anyway).

If you don't shift at all during your climb, I might suggest considering it. But if you change gears at all I'd nix the idea.

I ride both fixed and road....if you're climbing (and descending for that matter) don't do that to your knees. It'll come back to haunt you
