From gaining weight....keep you minds out of the gutter!:p
So despite staying active, now that I'm not riding everyday....I've gone up to 206 pounds!  :(
I'm never going to be a 160 pound climber, because I'm 6ft and have a rugged frame. But I'm getting a gut...and that's just unacceptable to me. For me 190-195 should be my "offseason" weight and 180-185 my "riding season" weight. But this year I struggled to stay around 195 during the season. Sadly...I know why...I like food too much! My portions are too big. It's not that my diet is that bad...it's that I eat too much.:( I do have one weakness...pizza. But I have no one to blame but myself for this.
So after this weekend, I'm going to start running again as often as my beat up Marine knees will allow in addition to a few nights a week on the fluid trainer and some resistance tranining a couple nights a week. I gotta get my weight back down before Spring.
Anyone else have this issue? I know there are some folks like Tom who have lost large amounts of weight. In fact several years ago I weighed almost 240! That's a long story...but suffice it to say that other than that period of a couple years...I have always been pretty fit. It just hard when you love food. I've started a "food diary" in a small notebook, to better track what I eat and how much. Gotta start creating a calorie deficit.
I guess I have to face the fact that I'm a lot closer to 40 than 30 and my body doesn;t burn up the calories like it used to.

out of curiosity are you drinking water? lots and lots of water? you can actually lose weight through drinking water. if you're dehydrated, your liver has to work overtime, and ends up creating a backlog of fat through food it can't process. so drink water. it's the quickest way.
edit: are you sure your pant's aren't shrinking?

Trust me...I know there is no "magic" in it. And I know I can do it...I'm just writing I guess to reflect on how much of a challenge it is at times.

NOT as simple as that when you have metabolic issues, it often requires hormone supplementation, either Gonadotropins, or Thyroid medication. In addition, you have to be extremely careful about losing weight if you are diabetic. It can also involve radical surgery, as a lifesaving measure due to the fact that after a certain point, exercise becomes literally impossible and the metabolism becomes so depressed that you can not lose weight without said intervention. It's not a;ways as simple as you make out, guys. :(
Here's an idea:
If you like Pizza so much, then earn it: ride your bike to Wooster Street in New Haven.
You'll get a good workout on the way, eat the best pizza in the US, and then ride it off going home.
Problem solved! :D

with all due respect, that does not seem to be the case here, nor is it the case for the general public.

I drink a LOT of water. Any more and I'd turn into a fish. Other than my morning coffee and the occasional pepsi....water is what I drink all the time. About four water bottles a day at my desk and four or five 20 oz. bottles of it after work on an average day.
Only eat what your two hands can hold. Seriously, if you put your hands together that is a cup. We should only eat a cup of food for each serving. For example if you eat chicken the size of the piece of chicken should be about the size of a deck of cards. Then if you eat veggies it should only be the amount of cup or less.
This will help you lose weight and really thats about the amount of food that you should eat.
It work and so does a regular exercise program. :)

dont worry cycle, you'll lose it again, you can increase your running maybe? that sure burns a lot of calories :)

The conversations on this have gone around and around - but this is far from bulletproof. And it's not so simple.
My advice (from a struggling shrinker) is to track everything you eat. Use Fitday and honestly put in every morsel of food that enters your mouth. Look for a good percentage of fat-calories-protein (30-50-20 seems to be a good one to start off from). Track yourself for a week without changing anything, see what your baseline is. After a week look for things to cut out (soda, sugar, etc...).

Now there is a good suggestion!:D Let's see, 872 miles, each way,not allowing for wind or terrain, that's 24,872 calories burned each way! Woohoo! I'll be there in a bit over a week if the weather cooperates!:D You buyin'?:D

I appreciate the replies. While I'm not so much looking for diet tips, but will consider what some of you posted, I excercise a lot more than the average person. Most of you know that I ride wellover 3,000 miles a year outdoors, stay on a trainer over the winter and throw in a little jogging here and there, so it's not like I'm not active. I am more commmenting on the fact that as I've gotten older...I've had to increase the amount of exercise I get to maintain a what I consider a healthy weight. Now I've got to give serious consideration to how much I eat and how my metabolism responds to my food intake. I guess I'm just saying I don;t have the metabolism that I did even a few years ago and maintaining a wieght that I'm happy with will be harder. As a cyclist that's obviously a factor for me. Could I be more active over the winter? yes...and I'm going to have to do that and cut back on the food if I want to lose the extra weight and maintain now that my body has gone through yet another change.

Anyone else have this issue?
Ayup. I hate riding in the dark so I've been running sporadically and lifting weights 2 to 3 times a week. All to pretty much maintain my gut... I'd like to run more but I can only get in about 5 miles at a time a few times a week before my legs start giving me problems.
But, now that xmas traffic is gone and I have the money to buy a nice bag, I don't really have any excuse to not ride into work. That'll be on the menu beginning next year.
I've also been keeping track of what I eat. Yestarday was 4300 calories...
But a third of that was from beer. Beer has good calories, right? Right?
In my mitts I'd wind up eating the whole bird!
I know for some it doesn't make sense but its been studied alot and it seems to be right.
I was having such a hard time losing weight and I started following this method along side with going to the gym and biking 6 days a week.
Also, you should eat 5-6 meals daily

For 99% of people, the "simple" solution works.
Another ting which I should have mentioned is that people are just built differently- some people are just built to be super thin, others a little more husky..
But a third of that was from beer. Beer has good calories, right? Right?
Yes. The beer calories mingle with the left over beer fairy dust and have a dance-off, resulting in both lost weight AND a killer cha-cha.
I'm incoherent this morning. Someone spike my coffee.

Hows this for motivation. If you ain't at 195 by the time we come out for Lancaster in August, you owe me an hour of PT in front of everyone - AFTER the ride - preferably in a bar with lots of cute gals watching you sweat to my bidding!

Yeah, you say your diet is good, but i wonder what that means? Look, in this country the average diet is horrible. With all of the fast food and fried fatty foods, being fat is almost a given. You don't have to eat fish nuts and salads the rest of your life, but you'll need to say goodbye to the fast food restaurants and fried food.
Everyone has there way of doing it but for me, the last 4 + years I have simply avoided high fat, fried fast food and red meat. And yeah, i still have pizza too occasionally, because i like to. At the end of the day it's about WHAT you put into your mouth and how active you are. But what you put in your mouth is more important than how much or physical activity.
