are there any considerations about using a BMX style helmet for mountain biking? like, do they protect as well as a traditional helmet?

i just like the way those look, but if they dont have the kind of protection that the traditional helmets have, then i'm goin with one of those.

thanks

I really think that the protection from a BMX style helmet would be superior.

They just may be too hot to really be comfortable.

Protection may not be better but the durability in a crash would be since they have a harder outer shell. Won't be as likely to crack into several pieces upon impact. I have one that I use sometimes but it is a little hotter than a MTB helmet with lots of vents. You probably wouldn't notice unless you tested the two back to back. My BMX helmet fits more securely on my head since it has more padding and has interchangeable pads to adjust for size. I would recommend a Pro- tec.

Every helmet sold should have a sticker stating the testing standard that the helmet meets. Check these standards for each type of helmet and look them up on the internet and see which one has the tougher test.

If both helmets state the same standard, then you'll have to compare the construction and make your best judgement.

I think they're at least as good. Plus, they don't look as horrible as most "mtb" helmets, they are cheaper, and they last longer. I wear one.

Both types of helmets have to meet the same CPSC standred for head protection. I'd recommend aganist using a BMX helmet while trail riding in the Southeast for more then 15 minutes. BMX/skateboard helmets are designed more for protection and not for comfort, while your bike helmets are designed for portection and comfort. Many of your new helmets help keep your head cooler with well designed vents and shells that refelct sunlight.

Yeah, Beuafort's cool, I work in Hilton Head, and smell Savannah. Charleston is cool to visit.

Heat buildup is a serious consideration for those who ride long and/or hard. Make sure whatever helmet you use fits you properly, provides test-certified protection (I think all the new ones have to), and does not make you a "hothead."

All helmets sold in the US have to meet the CPSC crash standred, otherwise they cannot be sold.
