What are some good suggestions to prevent getting a Brooks Saddle sompletely soaked while riding in the rain?

Thats what the proofide is for. a water-resistant layer of "wax".
When I transport my bike on the backof the car or am going to have to leave it in the rain I put one of those "gladbag elastic things" over the saddle.
A BROOKS is made from the same type of leather that a cowboy horse saddle is made from. And they get rained on a lot. you have to maintain them, then they last forever.

Fenders help for the underside of the saddle.
Be sure you let it air dry natually if it does get wet.
Rivendell has a Carradice bonnet for the B17 priced at 15$.

Saddle cover, Proofide and fenders. My saddle cover is water proof and allows only about an 1.5" opening around the seat post. Made of very thin material, I cannot even fel it.

For short term commuting, I went to Wal mart and picked up a small size heavy duty shower cap.

I put some leather conditioner on my saddle and now it squeaks like crazy. Oh well - at least I know it's protected from the weather.:D

RHNiles has the scoop!! Best rain protection for a Brooks=Walmart disposable shower cap. Also use Proofide ONLY and then only sparingly on the top surface. You should also smear a bunch of it on the underside of a new saddle and leave it there.

1oldroadie is right, proofhide is all it takes, give it the care it needs and ride it. I cover mine only when I'm not on it, when I'm on it I cover it.

When the weather looks ominous, I stuff a plain old plastic bag from the supermarket--as in "paper or plastic?"--between the seat bag and the underside of the saddle. It is large enough to fit over the saddle entirely, and by tieing the handles, it also covers the underside from road spray. They are cheap ($0) and easily replaced. On a local club event several weeks ago, I forgot to bring a bag but got one at the food/rest stop.

I keep a couple of those bags permanently stashed beween my saddle rails. They work as saddle covers and rain booties.

That's my exact reply MichaelW, I've been doing it for years. And as Irzipris says, you can't beat the price.
