Mountain Biking - Stereotypical Horror

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was out on a rare mountain bike ride with a friend when I made a taco special out of my front rim and broke my arm. We had no cellphone reception and were about 7 miles from our car. While schleping my bike out and moaning about my arm, along comes another guy on a bike. My girlfriend tried to wave him down and we both yelled at him for help, but he zoomed past us and screamed obsceneties at us, apparently for our "blocking" his path. This could not have been more stereotypically demonic mountain biker behavior if it had been scripted. The guy was likley in his early 20s, obviously trying hard to cultivate the Jesus or Eddie vedder circa 1992 look. I figure he's unemployed, smokes dope and lives with his parents. That's what I get for leaving the pavement. Damn Sasquatch-looking jerk...I hope he smokes some paraquat-laced weed and ends up in the ICU.
That's what I get for leaving the pavement.
Go back to the pavement.
Hey sorry about the obsceneties. I was being chased by a giant penguin.
But then again, that could have been some bad weed that day.

This demonstartes my point...only one reasonable response so far. I doubt he could not see I had some problems, but it is possible. However, his overall bevaior was that of a troglodytic stoner with microphallus issues. Typical of most mountain bikers...a special breed who share kinship with carnies, Star Trek Convention/Dungeons and Dragons dorks, and inbred hillbilly banjo pickers. I only hope that this evil wretch's mom takes his allowance away. The same for you loser slackers who bashed my plight...go smoke some more weed...mexican drug cartels are depending on you for their income!

However, anytime I am stuck changing a flat or something, other riders usually stop and ask if I'm okay. I try to do the same. I think it is just good bike etiquette to atleast slow down.
But not a good idea to stereotype because of one idiot. If you want sympathy for your plight, I wouldn't catagorize all mountain bikers like you are. Most mountain bikers I've met are decent people.
If mountain bikers are such jerks why bother wasting your time telling us about it. I mean afterall, we must already know this right?
Trolling works much better in lakes and rivers by the way, catch a lot more fish there.

lol at Lamar's response.
But in all seriousness it sounds like he was unaware of your situation and was zoned in on the trail. Either that or you just came across a jerk. No need to stereotype mountain bikers or pot smokers :p . I have found most people who smoke are calmer and more willing to help others in time of need. I hope it doesn't stop you from healing up and hitting the trails once again.

Yes, that's right. Stop stereotyping pot smokers. That's funny.

I take personal offense to this comment. I do not smoke weed, have never been to a Star Trek convention, don't know the first thing about Dungeons and Dragons, nor am I a hillbilly. Additionally, I'm quite a decent person should you meet me face to face and would probably have stopped to see if you and your boyfriend were alright. However, with the attitude that you've shown here, I am now inclined to say that I hope your broken arm doesn't heal properly and eliminates any future chances of you mountain biking, road biking or any other type of biking.
Davefarb I woulda give ya one of these if I passed ya on the trail...

Davefarb- count your lucky stars you came accross this eddie vedder esque pot smoking troglodyte.
I and many other MTBer's I know would have spit in your face for blocking my path. Then I would have tail whipped your broken arm and after your girlfriend saw my fantastic tail whipping, she would have rode off with me to 'do it' in the woods while you writhed in pain.
Please......be more cautious out there.

Davefarb, you sound like you are a very nasty, nasty person, which I hope you are not. Why are you so mean? You must really have an unhappy life to categorize people into a group like that because of the bikes they ride. Such negativity.
So how do you categorize yourself?
I hope that your arm heals soon and that you don't keep this bad feeling within you. I honestly hope all goes better for you, nobody should have to feel as ugly as you do. :o

I would prefer to hear how long it took you to get back to the car and any tips on how you managed to push the bike and handle the arm problem the 7 miles back to the car. Now that would be useful and interesting.

This reminds me of something! MTBer bashes roadie, Roadie bashes MTBer. Its like life, the dog (being MTBers) never gets along with the cat (roadie). Its the way its been forever and ever. But some get along, if they are not pot heads.
I would say we all have are ups and downs. And if I found you on the trail with a broken arm I would stop to help you.
And by the way, how do you break your arm when you taco your tire, where you doing something stupid mabe?

Well, I would have stopped to help you. I would have carried your bike out on my back. (done it B4) When you started talking about how MTB'ers are all stereotypically punks or whatever you're trying to say...I'd probably still carry your bike out.
"A bigot is a prejudiced person who is intolerant of opinions, lifestyles, or identities differing from his or her own." (Wikipedia)
How many roadies deserve a stick in the spokes for their attitudes? Probably the same as the number of MTB'ers. Tell ya what...if you're ever in the good ol flatlands of KS, email me and I'll show ya some trails with courteous riders. People who are more concerned with giving someone else the rightaway than losing momentum.
People that shout obscenities around here get dealt with. That's just the way it works. (you just don't see it on the trail, though) Heck...I accidentally ran a poor guy off the trail this past fall on accident. He flew off his ride and into the trees. I think it was a mutual mistake. We stopped and talked for a couple minutes and we were on our way.

I've been mountain biking since the late 80's (about '87) and I started road biking in '89. I was into BMX before that.
I've encountered all sorts, all attitudes and all prejudices.
I've had people throw things at me, or yell at me from cars when on my road bike. Yet, I don't hate all drivers.
I've had other roadies ignore me or refused to wave. Yet, I don't hate roadies.
I've had other mountain bikers scream, "Off the trail, I'm training!". Yet I don't hate all racers.
I've had hikers yell that I'm destroying the trail, even though studies proved differently. Yet I don't hate pedestrians.
I've ridden through horse crap. Yet, I don't hate equestrians.
You shown us who you are by your comments. Yet I don't hate you!

I may not be very diplomatic or nice, but this hardly means that I am a troll or worthy of a painful injury and being flipped the bird simply for stating my opinions. Yea, some of my prior posts may be "harsh", especially my anti-Floydian ones (he's a doper and chose to abandon the path of God...the ONLY unforgivable sin). Yea, I lumped all mountain bikers into the stoner camp. This does not make me a monster worthy of the anger shown. Perhaps marijuana does not calm YOU down as much as you think. perhaps you are a gel due to chronic abuse of an illegal drug. I can only imagine the horror that must be your lives- wake, bake...go for a bike ride...smoke some more. Then, you avoid your parents so they won't give you grief about still being unemployed. You'd call your grildfriend, but thats right...unemployed slackers like you have difficulty finding chicks. maybe you'll be featured on an upcoming episode of COPs...in your finest wifebeater shirt. My arm will heal. Your lungs will not. Marley died of cancer....wonder where he got that...

Holy, that's my life description right there!
I couldn't figure out why everyone was getting up your ass until I noticed the post where you generalized all mountain bikers as pot head, geeks. You basically insulted everyone by your ignorant posts, based on the fact ONE person didn't stop. Sadly, none of your generalizations are anything like me.
I still would have helped you, even if you are an ass clown. I'm sure you wouldn't have been an ahole in person. How nice it is to sit behind your screen and post a bunch of crap.

His drug references (Floyd, all mountain bikers) obviously are some form of cry for help or attention. I mean how else can someone jump to the conclusion that a guy passing him on a trail, representing all mountain bikers, is on drugs.
I must say, his one-handed typing is very good given the broken arm. Must be a lot of practice. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/images/smilies/jack.gif
