A friend who supplies my bike part fix on regular basis has a N.O.S (new old stock) wheelset with Deore hubs and Mavic 221 rims. Price = Cheap!
Are the 221's any good?

The reviews seem pretty favorable. I would find out if the wheelset in question is in good shape before making any decisions. Dented and taco'd rims aren't much fun even if the price is right and the rims are a well-reviewed model.

I'm not sure if they still make them or not, but they're decent rims. I know of a guy who weighs 200-plus who used them for years without problems, and he's a very agressive rider who's generally pretty hard on equipment-

My mtn.bike has xt hubs w/Mavic 221 rims. I've ridden over rocks, logs, roots, and no problems. I did have to take the wheelset to a local shop to have them tensioned and trued (was a machine built wheelset and went out of true in no time flat). But the rims have held up fine.
