Mountain Biking - What Pisses You Off?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

What is the one thing about cycling and specifically this forum that really gets you pissed. What frustrates you to the maximum.
With me, it's people who ask for an opinion, and get made when you disagree with them. There are a ton of members here with a wealth of information and experience. When a newbie gets an answer that is given to prevent a waste of time or money, they ignore it. I guess sometimes people "Gotta Learn the Hard Way!"
There are some threads here where a new member asks "What do you thing about....", then gets mad when we tell them!
I know for Raiyn, it's AOLese, what are some other "Pet Peeves"?

what really pisses me off is i'm at work reading this forum instead of out riding my bike and camping. :)
also ive asked some newb questions and really appreciate the opinions of the community. this is a really good forum, its rare for someone to talk down to people :)
As for the forum, well, nothing really. As for the cycling, there are 2 things, bad weather and drivers who think they own the road.

List of what pisses me off:
1. This isnt too bad but------Mis spellings and wrong verb tenses (why cant people take time to read what they type). I know I shorten my words sometimes but its not bad at all.
2. People that have to ask about everything that comes to mind, there are things called search engines that you can use to find your answer MUCH faster and to answer your question we often (I do atleast) use search engines....so we are pretty much your servents.
3. Kids that post threads that are annoying.
4. People that come up with ideas that are pretty much pointless.
5. Pterman, and any of his relatives.
6. Fearing banishment:D
7. The same question getting asked more than once, unless it was a long time ago that the question was asked.

Hopefully I can abide by that rule soon.:(
I just went for my first ride on my new rig and the one thing I hate is clay like MUD! Today was the worst day I've ever been riding. The tires were locked because of all the mud. I had to hose the whole thing down when I got home and there's a pile of mud on my driveway now.
Any thought on stuff I should relube? Or should I just take it in to the shop and exercise my free tune ups for a year? =)
I understand people can seem inconsiderate when they post things in near-illegible 'AOLese,' but I don't really see a reason to get angry with them. I don't think anyone comes to this forum with mindset, "I think I'll come annoy Klein today." In fact, I'm almost certain of it.
PTwhatever fit two criteria that this forum almost always holds against a person. One, he was buying a Walmart bike. The guy ran a paper route for goodness sake. Two, he's changed the way he writes into an all-too-typical, as its being called, AOL'ese. Don't get me wrong. I consider AOL'ese is a terminal disease. I see kids in high-school, even college turning assignments in riddled with this crap. I think it should be discouraged at every possible turn. However, the guy just wanted advice. We're in an informal setting, no one is going to find a big red F at the top of their post. And its certainly not the case that he isn't going to ride off-road. No one gets a bike as dirty as that on the road. Not without a little trowel and some water.
I blame him for not taking the advice he was given for what it was worth, then leaving it at that.
[/rant]
I recently became a member, so I don't have any complaints about this forum. I LOVE it!! Thanks to Cadd for sending me the link. :D:
Now cycling is another story. What pisses me off is when some motorists....
1) Makes a turn without signaling.
2) Pulling out of parking spaces without looking.
3) Opening car doors without peeking and
4) Getting hit without stopping.
5) And not let's forget, cyclists riding in the opposite direction of traffic, expecting me to move into traffic, so they don't have too. Don't think so. :-)

racial slurs.
but i've only seen a few on the forum.
other than that i'm happy to be here.
I hate people who bash ANYBODY they possibly can for stupid things. Not everyone is Shakespeare.. most of the newbs are just here to have a good time and maybe learn a thing or two. They're way too quick to bash others and insult people. Something about the anonymity of the internet seems to bring out the inner as shole in people. Just because you CAN say something doesn't necessarily mean you should. Maybe their mom's never told them that
"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."
:)
a2, I've been pissed off all day about the same thing. For God's sake, we're not trying to be snobs, but many of us have worked at shops, live and breathe bikes, ride everyday, ride tons of mileage, read all the mags, search for info on the net...blah blah blah..Then someone comes along and gets ticked and says we are "bike snobs" cuz we only like high end stuff. Geeeeeeez.
Another thing that pisses me off is people who dis their shop because the salesmen are "pushy" or something of the like. Arrrgh. The sales people are jsut trying to get paid, just like everyone else in the world.
Where has the respect for experience, knowledge, and wisdom gone???
things that piss me off:
1. high prices for bikes/accessories/components.
2. snapping my chain on the beginning of an uphill ride.
1oldRoadie

1. anybody that complains about this great forum and then ask for help on it.
2. mountin' bikes with tires worn flat from only being rode on payment.
3. Beautiful women that don't smile (at me).
^
Number 3 hits home for me. I figured once I started shaving my legs I'd be good to go with the lovely ladies. Numbers 1 and 2 are only slightly less annoying.

Waldo...I like your style kid!!
On our bikes, or on our forum, we're having a good time either way, so no need to get really annoyed. But, having the said that, there are occasions when we do.;)
I get annoyed when people are rude about other people's bike choices. I agree advice is often asked for and given but there are people who give it in a derogatory manner and I don't like that.
It's nice to like the best of stuff, but I imagine most of us started out with equipment at the bottom end of the ladder.
Other than that, cruelty to animals and children gets my goat, racism and blind nationalism too.

People who bump threads they purport not to like by posting a heap of replies about "why do you need to ask this? What's the point?" etc etc. For Gawd's sake, if it bothers you that much, don't read it! I've gotta wonder how some people find the time to continually bump and re-bump threads that don't interest them!
Also add people who whinge and whine about other forum members instead of just using the ignore list. WTF do you think we have it for? To make the page look pretty?

Exactly. Nobody makes you open a thread and read it. I've typed out replies to members bashing on others, then realized I was putting myself in the same boat as them and just hit the back button. I just don't get why anyone would want to argue over the internet...

I know exactly which thread you're talking about!

Ditto, and the reason I started this thread!
A certain un-named member asks a question, gets good advice, refuses to take it for what it is, then the thread degredates into bashing! If you don't want to know, don't ask!
I always try to be helpful and informative, not just to the specific question being asked, but to include any other tangential questions that WILL arise in addition to what is being asked. I almost know what will be asked NEXT due to my experience in a bike shop.
To many, it's appreciated to some it's not. I refrain from posting in threads when I sense "stupidity or should I say ignorance and arrogance" on the members part. This is unfortunate, because my advice might be what the member is after. I just keep my posts to myself in that situation.
Another "pet-peeve" is when someone answers a question without reading it fully. e.g. a person asks about a FR wheel, and gets advice on building up a XC wheel. (No specific topic, just an analogy I pulled out of my head).

hmmm... what annoys me....?
Nothing, really, well there are things that annoy me, but I can ignore most of what people say here, unless it is spiteful.
Then I think about writing a strong letter to a mid level bureaucrat, who will more than likely do nothing, but at least its off of my desk. Well that is if I do write.
But in real life what really pisses me off is Celebreties selling Social injustice and poverty as a point to further promote their career, this, from people who live in a dream world.

Nothing actually pisses me off about the forums, but something bother me a little.
Blatant misspellings (Funny anecdote, I don't know if I spelled misspellings right)
Repeating questions over and over again, or with minor changes (is this good? New thread: is this good? New thread...)
Impatient or condescending answers to questions. There is no such thing as a dumb question (as long as the answer isn't LITERALLY obvious to a four year old).
As far as cycling in general:
The drivers who seem to try to get as close as possible to you.
Drivers who don't pay attention to your fragile existence.
Cyclists who like to affirm their superiority out loud.
Cyclists who ride more dangerously than they drive.
Maelstrom
04-25-03, 02:55 PM
a) people no test drive - people want opinion - people don't like opinion and still don't test drive
b) I really don't like people that feel that I need to test ride or test EVERY product to give my opinion. I can generally give an opinion about most parts just knowing the mechanics behind the part OR the reputation of trusted people. I can read a bikes specs and geometry and usually know what it will be good for and how etc...
c) AOLese...(I never knew this word existed until Raiyn)
d) repeating MANY other posts without adding something useful just reiterating (10 posts saying that said wheel will be prefect is overkill)
These aren't 'this' forum specific...just annoyances that occur in real life too (aolese can be skater talk etc)...:)
I don't have any problems with drivers ever...:D...
Other things in general
1 - people that ride the trails and slide the entire time. They never let go of their rear brake.
2 - people that complain about trail conditions but I never see them with a shovel.

what he said.
1. if you're going to do the harder trails, PLEASE don't wimp out and brake the whole way down. it ruins the trail for those of us who want to bomb it the way it was meant to be.
2. someone else mentioned the necessary sweat time. why don't people think about how the trail they're riding on got there in the first place, and what it takes to keep it up?

The thing that bothers me on this forum...it probably shouldn't...
It is when I am reading a post, and the problem sounds odd, but I know the answer! I get so happy, but then I found out that someone else answered it before me. For instance, awhile ago, someone said that they had a notchey headset. They couldn't loosen it without being too slack, and when they had the correct tension, they had "indexed steering" Right away, in the back reaches of my mind, I was trying to think of the term. brinnelling! (sp?). I quickly pushed the post reply button button (before the quick reply box days) and while reviewing the post, I realized that someone had already answered it! Beaten to the Punch! RAts!
Anyway, I suppose that the person was helped, but I like when I can come up with the answer. no biggie. You guys shouldn't stop answered questions because of this, but I know you guys have had this experience.
people with over 5,000 posts.:D

Since you are directly talking about me, the ignore list is pointless because it leaves a message saying "This person is on your Ignore List. To view this post click [here]". I have tried to ignore people but I am soooo tempted to view their post and I always end up reading it and then unblocking them. I know its not possible yet but when you can take somebodys name off of everything then do it. I only have a problem with 1 person on bikeforums, and a ton of other people have a problem with the person too.

Things that piss me off (i guess about cycling and this forum).
1. People that ask questions written in such poorly worded english that it makes you want to rip hair out and bang your head on the desk.
2. AOL typing. (or what ever "epidemic" you guys call it).
3. Fidgity derailleurs that just WONT adjust... (the days where they just dont want to work no matter how much time you spend adjusting them).
4. Flat tires... (grrr!)
5. Having a *small* crash.... and finding out it hurts more than that *huge* crash you took a few days ago... (haven't ya ever noticed it's the small crashes that hurt more!?).
6. Stupid people. (people that don't use "common" sense. That's why I call it "uncommon sense" now.).
I do believe thats enough for now. I attempt to keep member bashing to a minumum, but if they post some outlandish thing that should be bashed.. I'll let em' know.
This board is one of the better ones overall though. Congrats to all you guys, as 3/4's of this group seems more mature and grown up about opinions and answers.

What pisses me off!
1. I love mountain biking and road biking about equally - It's dificult to find the time I want to do both. I tend to concentrate on road one week, mountain the next.
2. I don't like to be sitting in front of a computer wasting time on the net, but I think I'm addicted! I think I should take a week or so off from this forum, but I'm too afraid I'll miss something interesting.
what pisses me off?
Spiders the size of my hand that have decided the best place for a web is across my favorite piece of singletrack :(
I hate spiders.

Spiders... grrrr
Spiders are one of the few creatures on earth to which I grant no mercy. When I see one of the local variety HUGE spiders, I'll go get a shovel (long), pound it to nothing, then go huddle in the corner afraid that he called for help in his dying moments.

L8R Yup that pretty much sums up my s***list for the forum. One thing that irks me more than anything? LITTERBUGS! I can't stand f***wits who tear the top off a Gu pack, toss it randomly, and then have the Brass Balls to say how much they LOVE the trail! My current thing that really irks me, is broken parts when you don't have a spare! In addition, those parts that must be special ordered!
Been 4 weeks now that I'm off my mtn bike. I really, really don't like being forced to be a roadie. I think it's starting to have an adverse affect on me. I bought a new pair of shoes and pedals, and they're both ROAD SPECIFIC! YIKES! I'm turning into Fubar!!!!!!!! j/k dude!
